Position: Environmental Technician
Organization: Watersheds Canada
Location: Perth, Ontario
Eligiblity: under 30, post-secondary graduates (see below)

Great new job opportunity with Watersheds Canada in Perth, Ontario as an Environmental Technician. Start date is September 9, 2019. This is a 6-month contract @ $15/hour.

The successful applicant will contribute to the stewardship and outreach work at Watersheds Canada, by working to raise landowner awareness of water stewardship principles and environmental impacts on the lakes/rivers within Eastern Ontario. Working with partners, organizations and individuals, the Environmental Technician is responsible to assist in the delivery of our Natural Edge Program. This will include field work focusing on carrying out shoreline naturalizations and developing planting plans. The student will assist in conducting site visits at shoreline properties and help deliver our spring and fall planting. They will also deliver workshops and presentations to inform the community of the program

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Responsibilities

  • Aid in delivery of our spring planting program; planting native species along shorelines of both residential and public lands.
  • Promote our program and engage new landowners in shoreline naturalization projects.
  • Represent the project, the proponent and partners at local fairs, AGMs and other environmental events.
  • Assist with landowner site visits including data collection and entry.
  • Assist with creating personalized planting plans for landowners taking part in the program.
  • Solicit information from residents, attendees of local events, etc. that may contribute to data collection activities (surveys and evaluations).
  • Help organize and deliver workshops and presentations on both our program and habitat creation topics.
  • Caring for native plants including watering and maintenance.
  • Conducting research on native plants across Canada for shoreline plant database
  • Write blog and communications content
  • Assist with Love Your Lake and other programs

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support other project components and staff as assigned by the management
  • Act as a spokesperson for Watersheds Canada
  • Some local travel, evening and weekend work is required

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Experience

None required, however preference will be given to those with some experience in the conservation and/or environmental sectors

Skills

  • Ability to identify native plant species
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments and work schedules
  • Comfortable working around water
  • Fieldwork is a strong asset
  • Excellent judgment and decision making skills
  • Comfortable with public speaking and engagement of the public
  • Excellent written and oral communication, in English.
  • Proven multi-tasking skills in a fast-paced environment, completing projects within time constraints
  • Computer skills with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Publisher, Access, and Outlook
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Proven high level of motivation and initiative
  • Good writing skills
  • Some physical work, therefore ability to carry up to 50lbs is an asset

Education Required

College or University degree, with preference given to those with a specialization in Natural Resources Management, Environmental Studies/Science, or Biology

Certifications required

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  • Able to work outside in all weather conditions
  • First-aid/CPR (must be certified before start date)
