MUNICIPAL ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

The City of Mississauga is looking for a Manager, Environment to join their Parks, Forestry, and Environment team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director, Parks, Forestry and Environment, this position will provide leadership and manage environmental sustainability issues, goals, strategies and policies for the City. The position will focus on ensuring interdepartmental cooperation and strategic alignment in the development of environmentally sustainable best practices and recommendations on environmental issues, strategies, promotions, programs and policies. The successful candidate will also develop and report on the annual plan for Senior Management and Council, while prioritizing environmental initiatives, and providing technical support to the Environmental Advisory Committee to Council.

  • Responsible for the development of the City’s first Climate Change Action Plan, update and implementation of the Living Green Master Plan and Corporate Waste Diversion Strategy.
  • Communicates with and provides coordination for strategic alignment between professional and technical staff in the City's departments and divisions working on environmental sustainability initiatives.
  • Reviews, monitors and reports to the Leadership Team and Council, and prioritizing environmentally sustainable initiatives.
  • Reviews, coordinates and responds to environmental issues associated with the Environmental Advisory Committee to Council.
  • Recommends and develops corporate policies, procedures and programs to enhance the achievement of a sustainable community.
  • Develops and manages work plans, establishing and changing priorities, and timetables in response to changing resources and staffing conditions.
  • Seek, acquire and manage grants to support environmental plans and operations.
  • Create and support a community outreach program to raise awareness of environmental issues and City plans.
  • Supports and set agendas for Environmental Advisory Committee (Committee of Council).
  • Prepares reports for Council and Committees, as well as the Director and, as appropriate, makes presentations on behalf of the Division.
  • Evaluates proposed legislation of other levels of government as it pertains to the City's environmental goals and strategies.
  • Builds and fosters intergovernmental, public/community and public/private partnerships, promotions and initiatives to support and advance the City's environmental sustainability goals and strategies.
  • Participates on Corporate, departmental, and divisional working groups, committees, or special projects as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree from a recognized university program in Environmental Studies, Public Relations, Marketing or related field.
  • 7 to 10 years of progressively responsibilities in environmental experience, including experience at the management level with solid understanding of the workings of a municipal government.
  • Have a breadth of knowledge in the field of Environmental Science and its relationship to the City’s services.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively and gain support from various stakeholders
  • Strong interpersonal skills including negotiation skills and presentation skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including strong report writing skills with the ability to liaise effectively with the public, elected officials and external agencies.
  • Must have strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles of environmental policy development, familiarity with provincial and federal legislation in the area of environmental management, experience with energy conservation, environmental sustainability, community development, municipal administration and human resources management.
