Position: Environmental Program Coordinator

Oakvillegreen is currently accepting applications for an Environmental Program Coordinator.

Oakvillegreen Conservation Association is a not-for-profit environmental organization with a vision to make Oakville a living city with enhanced natural diversity, stronger connections between natural areas, and healthier green spaces. We have been working since 2000 to reconnect people to the natural environment in their community through education, advocacy and opportunities for hands-on action.

Enjoy an experiential learning environment working as a member of Oakvillegreen’s programming team, reporting to the Program Director. The ideal candidate will possess superior interpersonal skills, event management experience and will have a passion for helping to engage the community in environmental projects.

Overview of Position

The Environmental Program Coordinator will support Oakvillegreen’s ongoing nature restoration, environmental education and outreach activities. Specialized work includes:

  • Planning and conducting hands-on stewardship and environmental protection activities such as treeplanting, garden stewardship, nature walks and invasive species removal with community volunteers, including children, youth, seniors and newcomers at sites in Oakville
  • Planning and conducting community outreach activities and environmental education programming for the community, including at schools, Oakvillegreen’s restoration locations, and at other community events
  • Recruiting volunteer participants in Oakvillegreen's programming and events, by conducting outreach with youth, seniors groups, newcomer groups and other community organizations
  • Distributing education and outreach materials in support of Oakvillegreen’s programs (treeplanting, rain gardens, pollinator gardens and green infrastructure)to various audiences
  • Scheduling and overseeing recurring stewardship activities at Oakvillegreen’s pollinator garden and rain garden sites, and providing instruction and training to participating volunteers.


  • passionate about environmental education and informed about environmental issues
  • great interpersonal skills and community engagement experience
  • excellent written and oral communication skills
  • proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, Google Docs/Forms, social media tools
  • proficiency in webinar based tools (Zoom, Facebook Live etc) to adapt programming from in-person activities to virtual, due to COVID restrictions in place
  • ability to perform stewardship activities in the field involving lifting, bending, digging, often in inclement weather
  • ideally, undertaking post-secondary education in a relevant field
  • willingness to work evenings and weekends in locations in and around Oakville
  • driver’s license and access to a car is an asset
  • experience in environmental education, event planning and working with volunteers is an asset
  • skills and experience with native gardening, including knowledge of native perennial species and stewardship techniques is an asset

Eligibility Requirements:

This position is made available through Service Canada’s Summer Jobs Program. The following requirements are necessary:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 30
  • Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations
  • Note that foreign students are not eligible
  • Valid vulnerable sector screening report (will be requested on offer of hire).
  • Hiring will be contingent on receipt of CSJ funding


  • Length of employment will be 15 weeks
  • 30 hours per week at $14.25/hour
  • The ideal start date is the week of Monday of May 10th, 2021
  • Some travel expenses covered
  • Some evening and weekend work will be required.
