AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

The City of Brampton has a Stormwater Charge that provides a dedicated, sustainable source of funding for stormwater operations, programs and asset management. Stormwater management is a shared responsibility amongst the City, its residents and businesses, and the Conservation Authorities. A Stormwater Education and Outreach program is a necessary component of stormwater asset management to elevate awareness of this shared responsibility, inform on flooding and risk management, and provide opportunities for community action.

The Coordinator, Stormwater Education & Outreach position is responsible for the development, implementation, and ongoing delivery of stormwater education programs and outreach opportunities for a variety of audiences and platforms to elevate awareness of stormwater management, how it protects people, property and the environment and why the City continuously invests in its stormwater infrastructure.

OPERATIONS

  • Working with community groups and environmental interest groups on information-sharing, education and community action opportunities.
  • Seeking community partners and building and maintaining strong relationships with educational institutions, citizens, businesses, senior and youth centers, volunteer and non-profit organizations.
  • Organizing and scheduling outreach events throughout the year, procuring resources.
  • Participating in National Public Works Week. Coordinating with various schools throughout Brampton to participate in the school tours and activities.
  • Developing relationships with schools, businesses and institutions to coordinate education and enrichment initiatives.
  • Developing community engagement plans and schedules.
  • Partnering with Brampton Emergency Management Office on stormwater and flood risk management initiatives.
  • Taking advantage of well-attended community events to attract interest in stormwater programs and information.
  • Liaising with Conservation Authorities for joint education and outreach programs.
  • Liaising with other operating departments, media, agencies and levels of government.
  • Researching and developing new content for stormwater programs and services, asset management, flood risk management and related topics and issues.
  • Developing and creating web content for the web page.
  • Developing content for distribution such as brochures, booklets, leaflets and other informational material.

    CUSTOMER SERVICE
  • Soliciting feedback on programs and content via surveys or similar methods.
  • Developing programming and information packages for schools throughout Brampton.

    COMMUNICATION
  • Delivering programming to schools, community groups, business groups
  • Social media initiatives

    CORPORATE CONTRIBUTION
  • Developing metrics to measure engagement and success.
  • Researching and developing strategies for effective outreach.
  • Working cooperatively with various environmental groups and committees.
  • Staying informed on stormwater management through research, knowledge sharing with experts and professionals

    BUDGET SUPPORT
  • Developing, preparing and managing budget expenditures and revenues
  • Ensuring financial accountability and viability of programs and expenditures
  • Writing and composing correspondence including proposals and reports applications
  • Pursuing sponsorship opportunities to offset program costs
  • Writing and submitting grant applications to offset program costs
  • Preparing reports, investigating and applying for grants and sponsorship opportunities.

    STAFF LEADERSHIP
  • Assessing support staffing levels and developing staffing plans for program delivery
  • Supervision of full time staff throughout the year
  • Assessing training needs and arranging for training initiatives
  • Performance evaluation, feedback and management
  • Preparation of work plans and schedules

SELECTION CRITERIA:

EDUCATION:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in related field (Environmental Studies, Education)

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ directly relevant experience
  • Minimum 2 years supervisory experience

OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS

  • Excellent public relations skills and ability to effectively deal with the public
  • Ability to understand technical information and complex topics and translate to simpler forms
  • Ability to plan, organize and schedule resources
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Valid, non-probationary Ontario Class G driver's license and access to a vehicle
  • Able to work variable hours including evenings and weekends
