Position: Project Manager, Salmon Watersheds Program

For the past ten years, the Salmon Watersheds Program (formerly the Skeena Salmon Program) has worked collaboratively with First Nations, provincial, and federal governments to undertake standardized assessments of the status of salmon populations and their habitats in north and central British Columbia (BC). A key part of our work is to make the data we assemble (public and expert-elicited), and the assessments we undertake, broadly accessible to the public. To support the communication of, and open access to, salmon-related data, the Salmon Watersheds Program has developed an online data visualization tool called the Pacific Salmon Explorer ( The Pacific Salmon Explorer allows the public to explore information on the status of salmon populations and pressures on their habitats, as well as access source datasets used in the underlying analyses.

The Salmon Watersheds Program is in a growth phase as we expand our work to other salmon-bearing watersheds in BC. We are currently partnering with local First Nations, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the Province of BC, and regional salmon experts to undertake salmon habitat and population assessments in new regions and integrate this information into the Pacific Salmon Explorer. We are seeking a Project Manager to support the delivery of our projects and, ultimately, help support salmon conservation. Come join our team!


The Project Manager will join an ambitious and tight-knit team that works closely on the delivery of the Salmon Watersheds Program. The Project Manager provides overall support and planning guidance for the delivery of the Salmon Watersheds Program, and direct support to the Salmon Watersheds Program Director. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, project management, coordination and documentation, outreach and engagement with external partners, support for salmon population and habitat assessments, development of program communications, grant development and reporting, and data acquisition. The ideal candidate has a background in salmon science, experience working with First Nations in BC, and project management experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Management and Coordination

  • Project management, planning, and coordination for current initiatives in southern BC and future initiatives in other regions.
  • Provide technical support and project coordination for a range of program initiatives.
  • Support the ongoing development, maintenance, and expansion of the Pacific Salmon Explorer.
  • Coordinate the development of new grant proposals and reporting on existing grants.

Outreach and Engagement

  • Collaborate with the team on developing strategies to tailor the engagement approach to regional needs and context.
  • Build and maintain relationships with project partners including First Nations, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Province of BC, and non-governmental organizations.
  • Coordinate activities and communications with external partners and collaborators.
  • Establish and coordinate the work of regional Technical Committees and other working groups, in collaboration in the Program Director & Manager.
  • Work with local knowledge holders to acquire salmon-related data.

Research and Analysis

  • Conduct research on project region (e.g. potential partners, existing initiatives, etc.).
  • Support the continuing development of assessment methodologies and documentation.
  • Provide research support for salmon population and habitat assessments.


  • Develop and coordinate internal and external communications including, but not limited to, program descriptions and project briefs.
  • Develop project documentation materials including, but not limited to, meeting summaries, documentation of methods, and project updates for internal reporting.
  • Write content for, design, and coordinate the development of Salmon Watersheds Program promotional materials with graphic designer (e.g. brochures, posters, etc.).
  • Prepare external presentations for a variety of audiences.
  • Contribute to the writing and coordinate the development of technical reports.

Required Education and Work Experience:

  • A Master’s degree in fisheries science, environmental science, biology, ecology, geography, natural resource management, or a related field, with a focus on Pacific salmon.
  • Two to five years of experience working in a similar role on salmon-related issues. Past success working in a not-for-profit team environment with similar responsibilities is preferred.
  • Experience in project management, planning, and coordination in a scientific context.
  • Experience working on salmon-related research.
  • Experience engaging with and developing close working relationships with First Nations communities. Good relationships with First Nations in the Fraser, Okanagan, Haida Gwaii, or Yukon would be an asset.

Required Other Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort working with diverse stakeholder groups on contentious resource management issues.
  • Experience with community engagement, working with committees or working groups, and developing relationships with project partners.
  • Experience working with external funding agencies and developing grant proposals.
  • Experience in written science communication and writing for lay audiences.
  • Excellent oral communication skills and experience communicating and presenting technical information to a broad audience, including First Nations, decision-makers, scientists, and civil society.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, set priorities, and meet rigid deadlines.
  • Experience working in a not-for-profit environment.

Additional Skills Desired:

  • Strong analytical skills and experience in salmon-related, ecological, or environmental research.
  • Strong data management skills and experience using Excel, Access, and/or other database applications.
  • Experience using GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent) to create maps.

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time permanent position beginning January 2019. The position is based at the PSF office in Vancouver but, for the right candidate, we are open to a remote position based in Victoria. Regular travel to communities throughout BC will be required. (All travel costs are covered by the employer.)
