Position: Restoration Specialist
Organization: Oldman Watershed Council
Location: Lethbridge, Alberta

Term position until March 31, 2021, with likelihood of extension

OWC’s Mission:

The Oldman Watershed Council (OWC) is a collaborative forum for all voices, working for watershed health through education, action, and stewardship.

Position Description:

The OWC is seeking a motivated, self-starter able to take on challenges, lead resotration efforts, and develop restoration programming. The Restoration Specialist will lead OWC’s restoration initiatives, which occur primarily in the headwaters. In addition to experience working on environmental restoration projects, the ideal candidate will posses excellent writing abilities and be willing to develop their existing skill set. They will able to write compelling grant applications, accurate reports, engaging blogs, and interesting educational articles. Preparing restoration plans and permit applications to government agencies is also a critical component of the position. A history of successful grant, funding, and permit applications is considered an asset.

A positive attitude and strong work ethic are required. As a small organization, the OWC offers a flexible, friendly work environment with 5 other staff members who will work closely with the Restoration Specialist to achieve organizational goals. The successful candidate will work full time (36.25 hours/week) from the OWC office in Lethbridge and will receive 3 weeks paid vacation per year.

Duties:

  • Lead all aspects of OWC’s restoration initiatives
  • Identify, prioritize, and map potential restoration sites in the headwater
  • Develop detailed restoration plans and obtain all necessary approvals from the Government of Alberta
  • Work in partnership with several non-profit organizations, landowners and government to achieve deliverables
  • Implement restoration activities, sometimes with landowners, volunteers, or contractors
  • Organize volunteer restoration events
  • Develop health and safety plans and ensure compliance
  • Showcase restoration activities by writing blogs, news articles, social media posts, website stories, etc.
  • Create compelling grant applications and reports, meet with funders
  • Report on deliverables and key performance indicators
  • Other duties as required

Salary Range: $50,000-54,000/year, depending on qualifications and experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Personable and friendly team player
  • Diploma or degree in environmental science, or similar
  • Excellent writing skills and experience writing for a public audience
  • Confidence to write grant applications and reports and meet with funders
  • Ability to use GIS, map restoration sites, mapping tools, etc.
  • Confidence to write restoration plans and permit applications to government agencies
  • Self-starter with a positive attitude and the motivation to take on challenges
  • Experience working in backcountry setting without cell service, comfortable in remote areas
  • Valid driver’s licence, experience driving in backcountry
  • Ability to collaborate in high-stress situations
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office, Google Apps (Gmail, Drive, Calendar)
  • Experience implementing restoration strategies in mountain and foothill ecosystems
  • Knowledge of local plant species and their value for restoration

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience working with rural landowners
  • Experience using hand tools, small power tools, augers, drills
  • Experience giving presentations and organizing volunteer events
  • Demonstrated track record of successful grant, funding, and permit applications
