Position: Communications and Administration Assistant
Type: 30-35 hr/wk starting at $12.25 ($14.00 if Employment Insurance eligible)
Term: 6 month contract with possibilities to extend depending on funding
Organization: The Deanery Project 
Lower Ship Harbour, Eastern Shore, Nova Scotia

The Deanery Project is an innovative environmental and arts learning centre located on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. We provide education and tools to strengthen communities and the environment through hands-on programs in permaculture, the arts, natural building, restorative forest management, food sovereignty and healthy living choices.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Support Deanery staff, (executive director & programmers) as needed through office management (registrations, outreach, web and FB postings, filing of reports & research, etc)
  • Produce bi-monthly newsletter
  • Coordinate & promote facility use for renters, staff and visitors
  • Help host visitors to the space
  • Maintain data management system
  • Work with Volunteer Committee to develop volunteer base
  • Document programs & events through photos and text
  • Write occasional articles for local paper and produce a bi-monthly newsletter
  • Maintain an eye to overall workplace safety 


  • Attend weekly staff meetings, and take minutes
  • Participate in and assist with other on site projects as needed
  • Maintain common staff and living spaces in good order


  • Passion for the environment
  • Minimum one year experience in event planning, communications & outreach
  • Computer literate especially with Word, Excel and Google Drive and social media platforms
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Reliable self-starter who is comfortable working in a team environment 


  • Live on the Eastern Shore
  • Have access to a vehicle
  • Creative writing and research experience
  • Experience with Macintosh & PC platforms, Nation Builder
  • Experience with gardens & food preparation
  • Experience in working with youth
