Position: Environmental Educator

The BC Sustainable Energy Association is looking to fill a contractor position as Environmental Educator with the Cool It! Climate Leadership Training program in Nelson, BC. The position is available for 6 months for the Spring 2020 school term.

BCSEA is a registered charity dedicated to supporting BC’s transition to a lower carbon future. Cool It! is BCSEA’s climate education program that focuses on the positive actions that youth and families can take in their own lives to reduce their environmental footprint. Over the past twelve years, Cool It! has been brought to hundreds of British Columbia elementary and middle schools, with thousands of children in the Lower Mainland and across BC rising to the challenge to take the lead as sustainability champions. With support from the City of Nelson and Nelson’s EcoSave program, BCSEA will be delivering the Cool It! program to schools throughout the Nelson Hydro region in Spring 2020.

We are looking for an experienced, organised, and motivated Environmental Educator to join our Spring 2020 delivery. Environmental Educators represent BCSEA in elementary, middle, and/or high school classrooms throughout the region and utilise different methods to engage students and deliver fun and motivating educational workshops on Climate Change issues and solutions. Educators are professional and build positive relationships with teachers, staff and administration to ensure the successful completion of the Cool It! Challenge and accurate reporting to funders of the program.

Educators are responsible for communicating proactively and respectfully with teachers to arrange workshops and pre-workshop materials; delivering climate education and action workshops; supporting teachers and students as they work on a four week climate challenge; reporting of results; and arranging prizes and class celebrations. When not delivering workshops, Educators work remotely. They also work closely with the Program Manager in program evaluation, updating educational materials and resources as needed, marketing and promotion of programs to their communities, schools, partners and BCSEA chapters, and raising any questions and concerns effectively.


  • Facilitation experience: 2+ years of facilitation experience in the field of school, visitor, camp or park education programs on environmental, natural history, outdoor or science programming; Ability to communicate effectively in large and small groups of children and adults; possess strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexibility: Availability to work varied hours over course of school term on a part-time basis; ability to travel throughout the region during school hours.
  • Administration: Ability to perform administrative duties (such as maintaining workshop records, some class results data entry). Able to use basic computer software and learn to use the new BCSEA website, familiarity with the Google Suite; capacity to respond to phone calls and emails within 24 hours.
  • Communication and Interpersonal: Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with staff and teachers; ability to work well independently. High level of professionalism and follow through, proactive and can-do attitude.
  • Knowledge: Working knowledge of climate change, environmental issues, and sustainability. Desirable - degree in a relevant field or equivalent training and certification. 
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset
  • Current Criminal Record Check
  • Regions required: Nelson region
  • Scope of work: delivery to 10- 15 classrooms (approx. 6 hours of work per class), plus potentially leading site visits around Nelson
  • Timeline of contract: January 1 - June 30, 2020
