Position: Education Program Coordinator
Organization: GreenUP
Location: various locations, Peterborough, Ontario - Mix of on-site at GreenUP Ecology Park, at GreenUP offices, possibility of Work-from-home, visiting schools through city and county

Term: 3 days/week with 5 days/week June - August, pending funding
Compensation: $20.00/hr with access to some employment benefits
Desired Start Date: January 2022
Reporting To: GreenUP Director of Programs

Organization Background:

GreenUP is a registered environmental charity that offers dozens of programs and services to those living and working in the Peterborough region. Our programs focus on facilitating positive action and providing the tools to make small changes that can create a large and lasting impact on our environment.

As an active community organization, we partner with individuals, businesses, other non-profit organizations, and governments to ensure that our region maintains its long-standing track record of environmental leadership in Ontario and across Canada.

GreenUP Ecology Park is a five-acre showcase of sustainable landscape ideas and resources. With a host of display gardens and naturalized areas, a native plant and tree nursery, education programs, skill-building workshops, and hands-on displays, this award-winning park is a vibrant sanctuary in the middle of our city.

Position Background:

GreenUP is seeking a Program Coordinator to coordinate education programs at GreenUP Ecology Park. Our ideal candidate is comfortable in a leadership position and eager to make change in their community. They are knowledgeable and passionate about environmental issues, Ontario ecology, and education.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for the development, delivery, evaluation, and administration of outdoor environmental education programs at GreenUP Ecology Park. This includes on-site school programs, children’s summer camps, as well as off-site environmental education programs. The Coordinator supports a small team of education and camp staff and volunteers during peak season. The Program Coordinator will also work alongside Program Directors to develop plans to sustain and grow GreenUP Ecology Park education programs and

Through this work, the Program Coordinator will provide critical learning experiences for students, teachers, and the general public. These experiences will inspire an ongoing interest in the living world, local ecology, and sustainable living, and will teach skills for environmental stewardship and resiliency.

Hours are variable through the year, mostly falling between Monday and Friday with occasional weekends and evenings. Flexible work hours will be provided in lieu of overtime. The majority of education and camp programs will take place at GreenUP Ecology Park in outdoor learning spaces, in a range of seasons and weather.

Key Coordinator Responsibilities:

  • Develop, deliver, and grow GreenUP Ecology Park’s Education Programs offered on-site and in the community, for a variety of audiences including school groups, various children’s camps, families, youth groups, daycare centres, adults, etc.
  • Develop, deliver, and grow GreenUP’s Summer Camp Programs.
  • Design and write curriculum-linked school programs including lesson plans, workshops, and support resources, for use by seasonal educators.
  • With the Program Director, create an evaluation framework and materials to assess the outcomes and impacts of the Ecology Park’s programs.
  • Assist in the set-up, maintenance, and take down of the Children’s Garden and education activity centres.
  • Assist and collaborate with Ecology Park staff on the development of new displays and programs as required.
  • Administer scheduling and registration of all education programs and camps.
  • With GreenUP’s Communication staff, create effective promotion and media products, for school and
  • community participants.
  • With the Program Director, recruit, train, schedule, and supervise part-time and/or seasonal staff and volunteers.
  • Responsibly manage program budgets and revenue collection.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all program participants at Ecology Park; effectively implement all of GreenUP’s Health and Safety procedures.
  • With Program Directors and GreenUP staff, set strategic direction for the growth of Ecology Park programming and contribute to the development of funding applications to support and sustain growth.
  • Establish, support, and strengthen relationships among partners and supporters throughout the region and across the province; and
  • Collaborate within GreenUP and support the organization’s overall work.

Key Characteristics and Skills:

  • Project Coordination: Demonstrated success in coordinating projects from conceptualization through to implementation. Organized and able to manage time well. Strong attention to detail.
  • Teamwork: Proven teamwork skills and the ability to work collaboratively. Manages conicts and setbacks with tact, respect, and professionalism. Able to support and mentor a team of educators and/or camp counselors to deliver exceptional programming in a positive work environment.
  • Skilled educator: Solid understanding of learning and education models for successful development and delivery of environmental education in a variety of environments for a wide range of audiences.
  • Initiative: Identies necessary improvements, new directions and priorities for projects, and is proactive in bringing those forward with rationale and recommendations for implementation. Works within the limitations of a non-prot environment and adapts to change and opportunity.
  • Conscientiousness: Able to juggle multiple priorities, effectively balancing short-term needs of programs with larger longer-term organizational goals.
  • Critical-thinking: Able to analyze problems systematically, asking good questions to identify underlying causes, and recommending potential solutions.
  • Strategic development mindset: Able to analyze current environment and identify opportunities for development and growth. Committed to fostering sustainable plans that meet organizational mandates and community needs.
  • Communication: Strong communication skills, with the ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively. Ability to deliver media statements on and off camera. Strong knowledge of software such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Adobe Illustrator and/or Canva considered an asset.

Environmentally-minded: Demonstrated commitment to the environment and community through previous work or volunteerism.


  • Post-secondary degree in related field of study
  • 2+ years experience leading and developing education programs for children
  • Experience with the Ontario Elementary and Secondary School Curriculum
  • Strong knowledge of local native plants, wildlife, aquatic systems, ecosystems, and food production
  • Knowledge of environmental issues, especially in the areas of waste reduction and climate change
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions
  • First Aid/CPR Certication is required
  • Required to produce a satisfactory current Police Vulnerable Sector Check upon hire
  • Must be able to meet local school board requirements regarding COVID-19 vaccination and screening
  • Valid Driver’s License may be required
