Position: Sustainability Education Assistant

Sustainability Education Assistant

35 hours per week, January–May 2020

The position: Ecosource is seeking a passionate, creative, and self-motivated individual who enjoys a fast-paced environment to lead environmental programming in both indoor and outdoor settings across Peel Region. The position will include the preparation, maintenance, and delivery of educational activities for students, teachers and community members, as well as support community events and other Ecosource programming. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about outdoor education and best practices in sustainability education. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required.


  • Develop and deliver environmental programming for children, youth, community members and teachers, focused on food and gardening, stormwater management, waste reduction and alternative energy
  • Develop and administer outdoor play opportunities for children and youth that emphasize healthy child development, inquiry skills, nature connection and active living for families
  • Collaborate with community partner agencies and schools to coordinate environmental activities
  • Coordinate regular email, written, and telephone communication with program participants and volunteers
  • Assist in organizing evaluation materials and data for Ecosource’s reporting activities
  • Conduct research on current environmental trends, community-based environmental projects, curriculum-linked program ideas, and children’s outdoor play opportunities and barriers in Ontario and Canada
  • Conduct outreach for Ecosource community events and workshops to be held at Ecosource’s main office, local community gardens, schools, and other public locations through telephone, e-communications, and in person
  • Assist with other Ecosource programs as required and represent the core values of Ecosource


  • Post-secondary education in environmental studies, education or related field and/or equivalent work experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of environmental issues including waste, energy, water, and sustainable food systems
  • Experience in group facilitation for all ages
  • Knowledge of outdoor education and sustainability education
  • Sound program planning, development, implementation, and evaluation skills
  • Willingness to undertake physical tasks in both indoor and outdoor settings, in a variety of weather conditions
  • Strong belief in creating social change by empowering individuals and families
  • Experience working with a variety of community agencies with excellent partnership management skills
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, and computer skills including all MS Office software applications and proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications
  • Energetic, flexible, and self-motivated
  • Ability to work independently, in a team and within various settings
  • Familiarity with the City of Mississauga and the Region of Peel is considered an asset, as is experience working with other diverse communities and/or the non-profit sector
  • Knowledge of the Ministry of Education’s Ontario Elementary and Secondary Curriculum is an asset
  • Applicants are required to hold a valid “G’ driver’s license and must have access to a reliable vehicle

Application Information:

This is a short-term contract position from January-May 2020 at 35 hours per week, paid at a rate of $18-$20 per hour dependent on experience. A Police Record Check will be required upon hiring.
