Positions: Outdoor Education Facilitator
Organization: Clearwater Farm, a project of the Ontario Water Centre

Housing: opportunity to live in community at ClearWater Farm in Georgina in “tiny houses”

Clearwater Farm (CWF) is a social enterprise that uses sustainable and organic growing methodologies our farm site is around the shores of Lake Simcoe in rural communities one hour from Toronto. CWF is the flagship project of the Ontario Water Centre that promotes understanding of and connection to the environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

We are looking for Outdoor Education Instructors to join our 2019 summer team to work with the Directors to design and deliver imaginative and age-appropriate day-to-day programming for the day camps run on the farm for youth ages 5-12. We encourage staff to listen deeply to the environment and to children, to show their vulnerability and bring their whole selves. We invite staff to demonstrate what it looks like to be impassioned, caring and empathetic adults connected to the natural world and skilled and comfortable in that environment. Every week’s camp is built on the inherent differences of the children involved and with the understanding that it is their natural inclinations or passions that lead to the building of infrastructure (fire pits, mounds of dirt, gardens). Program Activities range (not limited to) from fort building, cultivating edible mushrooms to harvesting wood in the forest, to building natural shelter, to cooking over a campfire and to crafting spoons and bowls.

Hours

The job is 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Experience & awareness in dealing with members of different cultural, ability and racial backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills e.g. conflict resolution, active listening, feedback
  • Understanding of group dynamics, demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on a team; ability to take direction from the leadership team.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions that combine safety and program quality
  • Demonstrated competencies to teach, guide, mentor youth through range of outdoor experiences
  • Ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with groups, staff and volunteers of various ages and backgrounds

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years in work experience with children ages 8-14 preferably with experience in the area of outdoor education focusing on play-based, student-led inquiry
  • Valid Police Vulnerable Sectors Check will be processed by employer
  • Must be Certified in CPR Level C and Standard First Aid
