Position: Nature Clubs Coordinator and Naturalist Teacher

Position: Nature Clubs Coordinator and Naturalist Teacher
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent; Tuesday-Saturday; 37.5 hours per week
Rate of pay: $17/hour

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Programs Director, the Clubs Coordinator and Naturalist Teacher will coordinate all the Nature Clubs at the High Park Nature Centre, as well as teach environmental education programs to children, youth, and adults. About 40% of this role is administrative, including planning clubs schedules, updating the website and our registration program (CampBrain), creating sign-in sheets, and planning program activities. About 60% of this role is teaching, mostly to early years (ages 0-5 and their caregivers) and children ages 6-10.

Main duties:

Teaching

  • Plan and develop outdoor environmental education programs;
  • Teach environmental education programs to children, youth, and adults, with a heavy focus on early years (ages 0-5 and their caregivers) and drop-off programs for children age 6-10; programs include nature clubs, camps, birthday parties, field trips, and special events;

Program Coordination, Planning and Administration

  • Coordinate all the HPNC’s nature club programs for early-years, children, youth, and adults;
  • Administer, coordinate, and process registrations for clubs;
  • Oversee registration and communications for clubs programs in concert with the Office Administrator;
  • Compile program registration lists for all clubs programs;
  • Distribute and analyze participant evaluation surveys and amend programming as needed;
  • Assess and implement health and safety protocols for club programs;
  • Work with Programs Director to develop a long-term program plan for each year;
  • Ensure program statistics are tracked accurately;
  • Prepare quarterly end-of-season club program reports;
  • Scope new curriculum and/or partnerships and propose new programs as related to clubs;
  • Represent clubs programs on the Programming Committee;
  • Work with coordinators and supervisor to revise program outlines and program development.
  • Provide training and mentorship to P/T staff, summer staff, volunteers, interns and co-op students working on clubs programs.
  • Provide Programs Director with input regarding club program fees and yearly budgets;
  • Track club program budgets and report on a quarterly basis;
  • Monitor CampBrain for club t-shirt orders and provide order information to Office Administrator.
  • Provide program information to Communications Coordinator to ensure timely communications schedule for club programs promotion;
  • Update the website on clubs programs.
  • Photography during programs for use in publicity and program materials;
  • Organize, repair, maintain and develop program supplies, props and displays;
  • Ensure daily building maintenance, animal care and purchase program and other materials (i.e. animal care supplies);
  • Other duties as required.

Human Resources

  • Provide training and mentorship to P/T staff, summer staff, volunteers, interns and co-op students working on clubs programs.

Financial

  • Provide Programs Director with input regarding club program fees and yearly budgets;
  • Track club program budgets and report on a quarterly basis;
  • Monitor CampBrain for club t-shirt orders and provide order information to Office Administrator.

Communication

  • Provide program information to Communications Coordinator to ensure timely communications schedule for club programs promotion;
  • Update the website on clubs programs.

On-Going

  • Photography during programs for use in publicity and program materials;
  • Organize, repair, maintain and develop program supplies, props and displays;
  • Ensure daily building maintenance, animal care and purchase program and other materials (i.e. animal care supplies);
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge, experience, skills and attributes:

  • Passionate about the environment and environmental education;
  • Enthusiastic, creative, and fun;
  • Experience in delivering, developing, and evaluating educational programs;
  • Experience working with children, youth and adults providing a positive learning experience for participants of all ages;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Experience with customer service and/or working with parents and caregivers;
  • A collaborative decision-maker with strong commitment to teamwork;
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and database software;
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in all conditions;
  • Current CPR and First Aid certificates or willingness to acquire;
  • Current Vulnerable Sector Check or willingness to acquire.

Assets:

  • University degree or college diploma in education, environmental studies or sciences or an environment-related discipline;
  • Strong knowledge of Toronto’s ecology and natural history;
  • Experience leading early years programming (age 0-5);
  • Experience working with teens in leadership building;
  • Musical ability;
  • Experience with CampBrain;
  • Fluency in French.
