Hiring: Nature Interpreter

Mag River Nature Hub is seeking enthusiastic and passionate Nature Interpreters aged 15 to 30 who are excited by the opportunity to “get their hands dirty” completing ecological restoration and supporting climate action projects in the Almaguin Highlands.

About Mag River Nature Hub and the Nature Interpreter Position

Mag River Nature Hub is a newly incorporated non-profit that focuses on climate action by supporting nature-based experiential recreation, environmental education, and creative ecological impact opportunities for residents and visitors to the Almaguin Highlands.

The Nature Interpreter position involves completing hands-on ecological restoration and climate action projects at a farm property in the Township of Ryerson. The position also involves engaging residents and visitors at local events and greenspaces.

Responsibilities:

The Nature Interpreter position involves the following tasks:

  1. Engage visitors at local events and greenspaces in climate action related education and nature interpretation activities.
  2. Steward newly planted trees, shrubs, and gardens by removing weeds and applying mulch.
  3. Install regenerative agriculture fencing projects.
  4. Complete trail creation and maintenance projects.
  5. Support the development and implementation of climate action projects like a renewable energy system, a sustainable building, and ecological garden enhancements.
  6. Demonstrate best-practices associated with an eco-living lifestyle and share relevant resources with visitors.
  7. Support the development and implementation of local climate action projects.
  8. Support the coordination of logistics associated with the annual Restoration Festival.
  9. Support administrative tasks associated with Mag River Nature Hub.
  10. Take responsibility to ensure that all healthy and safety procedures are followed.
  11. Represent Mag River Nature Hub in a professional manner at all times while modelling responsible behaviour that fosters sustainable citizenship.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Personal Characteristics:

  1. Meeting all youth participant eligibility requirements for the Canada Summer Jobs Program:
    1. be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
    2. be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment, and
    3. have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  2. Completed, or currently pursuing, secondary school or post-secondary studies in a field related to environmental studies, natural sciences, geography, education or recreation.
  3. Comfortable completing physical labour tasks in an outdoor setting.
  4. Comfortable working independently with a strong work ethic.
  5. Comfortable using tools independently following training.
  6. Passion for environmental issues and climate action.
  7. Experience working outdoors is an asset.
  8. Strong organizational and communication skills.
  9. Valid Ontario Driver’s License.
  10. First Aid and CPR certification is an asset.

Time Commitment:

  • 30 hours per week for 9 weeks starting Saturday, June 17th.

  1. $15.50/hour plus 4% vacation pay

  3. Coaching and mentorship from environmental professionals with expertise in a variety of fields including education, community engagement, ecological restoration, climate change, entrepreneurship, and creative arts.
