ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Position: Energy and Carbon Manager
Organization: Western University
Location: London, Ontario

Facilities Management is responsible for the planning, development, engineering, construction, operation, maintenance and stewardship of all the buildings, infrastructure, sites and services within Western’s campus community.

Western is committed to reducing its energy use and carbon emissions which represent significant risks and costs to the University. The size and complexity of Western’s operations requires a position focused on managing energy and carbon to achieve the desired reductions and alignment with federal and provincial environmental commitments.

The Energy and Carbon Manager works with other units to increase energy awareness, conservation and efficiency and will identify, implement and track recommended changes across campus. The role also manages projects and works in collaboration with the Energy & Environment Specialist and Project Managers.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Degree in Engineering
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) by the Association of Energy Engineers
  • Masters Degree in Engineering, Technology Management or Sustainability preferred
  • Leed Green Association preferred
  • RETScreen Expert preferred
  • Change management certification/training preferred

Experience:

  • 3 years of experience in the energy and/or carbon management field within the industrial, commercial and/or institutional sectors.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Facility with statistical analysis and methodologies as related to energy and/or carbon use
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to complete detailed analytics and reports with an emphasis on proposal development and presentation to internal contacts up to senior management
  • Ability to process information with high levels of accuracy and analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of detail/data
  • Ability to establish and build healthy working relations and partnerships with clients, peers and external stakeholders
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to gain consensus
  • Excellent organizational, time management and project management skills
  • A strong record of teamwork with the motivation and ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Ability to effectively drive and manage change initiatives that align with organizational strategies
  • Self-driven, independent thinker who is highly motivated and possesses an intrinsic passion for quality and process improvement
  • Strong problem solving skills including experience formulating and executing action plans
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and related budgets with strict deadlines
  • Proficiency in the use of standard office computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office)
  • Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments
  • Expert knowledge of carbon
  • Strong working knowledge of various energy sources and their impact on the environment
