Position: Executive Director

The Alberta Council for Environmental Education (ACEE) is an incorporated Alberta Society with federal charitable status. Our mission is to work in collaboration with stakeholders to advance environmental education in Alberta. This includes supporting teachers and educational districts in the K-12 system, as well as directly engaging students in environmental education.

The Executive Director of ACEE serves as the Chief Administrative Officer reporting to the Board of ACEE and on day-to-day matters to the Board Chair. The incumbent manages all business operations to achieve the mission, vision, operating values, guiding principles, annual program and strategic plans, goals and objectives of ACEE.

The position is broad in scope and multi-disciplinary, with senior-level exposure and interaction with elected officials, senior managers in all orders of government, corporate executives and owners, and the heads of not for profit organizations and foundations, and education leaders.

The role leads the organization in developing and managing plans and priorities, identifying funding sources and allocating resources in support of strategic directions, program and strategic plans, and policies established by the Board of Directors. The incumbent will direct a wide variety of activities and initiatives related to the short- and long-term objectives of implementing ACEE’s strategic direction or plan. The Executive Director will facilitate collaborative action amongst partners, funders, and other stakeholders.

Overall Key Responsibilities

The ACEE Executive Director will:

  • Ensure ACEE is delivering on a clear, well-defined mission statement that outlines the purpose, goals and objectives of the organization. It is important ACEE remain focused on its mission statement and objectives to deliver on committed outcomes.
  • Represent ACEE and show leadership within both the environmental education community and in the greater community.
  • Build recognition for ACEE through high-quality programs, effective partnerships, and media profile.
  • Provide advice, assistance and support to the Board and its committees, working groups and project teams in developing and implementing plans, objectives, policies and priorities, including coordination of all Board and Committee meetings and reporting.
  • Make recommendations, act upon and secure fund development initiatives in alignment with strategic plans.
  • Lead the management and operation of ACEE. This includes managing the:
    • implementation of the strategic priorities and/or an approved strategic plan in collaboration stakeholders, government and other funders,
    • business and financial affairs of ACEE in accordance with Board, order(s) of government, stakeholder and donor reporting and audit requirements,
    • activities of the various Board Committees and working groups, and
    • existing and new fund development initiatives including government grants, foundation grants and industry contributions that will fulfill ACEE’s strategic priorities and ensure the long-term sustainability.
  • Retains a diverse, highly qualified staff by providing opportunities for growth and personal development for workers.

Specific duties


  • Establishes fundraising goals with the Board and committees, design and implement a fundraising plan to meet those goals, engaging the support and assistance of Board members where appropriate.
  • Establishes and nurtures constructive working relationships with stakeholder individuals and organizations, including funders.

Strategic Planning

  • Collaborate with the Board to build and maintain a multi-year strategic plan.
  • Manage all activities, consultants and resources directed to planning and implementing ACEE’s strategic priorities.

Board Administrative Support

  • Oversee administrative support, to the ACEE Board, Committees and Board Chair.
  • Advise the Board of Directors, in a timely manner, of any risks, challenges or threats that may impact ACEE in accomplishing its goals and objectives or protecting its assets.
  • Work with the Board to design and implement policies, initiatives to serve the mission of ACEE, and realize the goals of our strategic plans.
  • Ensure adherence to ACEE’s legal obligations and reporting requirements, given our provincial incorporation and federal charitable status.
  • Arrange resourcing contracts as required to facilitate the day-to-day operations in accordance with the approved budget.

Administration and Financial Management

  • Direct the development and implementation of management, administrative and financial reporting systems to support Board decision-making.
  • Oversee grant accounting and reporting.
  • Provide regular and timely financial reporting to the Board.
  • Manage ACEE information systems to ensure the confidentiality of information.

Human Resources

  • Leads all permanent and part-time employees and contract staff.
  • Oversees all aspects of the full employment cycle of all staff and contract employees. This includes recruitment, hiring, on-boarding, training, supervision, evaluation, support of professional learning and separation of employment.
  • Models a diverse and equitable work environment.

Knowledge and Experience

  • A university degree in education, business administration, environmental studies or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 - 7 years of senior management experience working in an equivalent industry association, not-for-profit organization or institutional environment.
    • A proven track record of successful experience in a senior management capacity demonstrating a broad understanding of the public sector, business as well as working with not-for-profit and volunteer boards.
    • A team leader, with strong collaborative and interpersonal skills that can work with a Board of Directors, and Committee volunteers with diverse backgrounds and interests.
    • A proven ability to receive and act upon direction from a Board of Directors and its Chair and to meet timelines and produce reports in a timely fashion.
    • Proven management and administrative skills, particularly with the need to work collaboratively with partners and stakeholders while ensuring prudent management and transparent accountability are maintained.
    • Superior verbal and written communication and leadership skills with the ability to interact with the Board and staff and externally at all levels of public, funding and corporate organizations from government officials to local volunteers to corporate leaders.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with the education sector in areas relating to environmental education and stewardship, and sustainability.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Be a self-starter,
    • Be an inspiring and empathetic leader
    • Work independently as needed,
    • Both delegate and complete tasks as appropriate,
    • Think strategically
    • Assist the organization to maintain focus towards its strategic priorities.

Working Conditions

The role is a full-time, 37.5 hours weekly, salaried position that currently works in a remote environment but could be expanded to include a fixed location that may in either Edmonton or Calgary. Travel will be required to attend meetings, as requested, with donors, government representatives and other stakeholders. The Executive Director will also participate in events, such as teachers’ conventions and student retreats, throughout Alberta. Hours can be flexible to accommodate the demands of the position.
