ECOLOGICAL FARMING

Position: Ecological Market Gardener
Farm: Merkaba Acres
Location: Bobcaygeon, Ontario
Eligibility: 30 or younger

Merkaba Acres is a family-run ecological farm located in Bobcaygeon, ON on 167 acres of farmland, forest and wetland. We use regenerative practices to raise grass-fed cattle, pastured eggs and veggies. Our mission is to grow nourishing food, enrich the land, and foster a conscious, inclusive community. We are recruiting hard-working, positive and knowledgeable staff to join our market garden team for the 2021 season!

We are starting our new half-acre market garden this year and are looking for staff to help with the process from field prep to first sales! We are looking for someone with prior experience working in a market garden and the knowledge and skills associated with organic, no-till, biointensive growing practices.

The ideal candidate is:

  • Interested in and knowledgeable about regenerative agriculture
  • Trustworthy, self-motivated, takes initiative and is able to work alone
  • Fit for physical and repetitive labour
  • Enjoys working outdoors in all weather
  • A team player and good communicator
  • Patient, flexible and has a positive attitude
  • Open to giving and receiving feedback
  • Adaptable and able to shift gears regularly in a dynamic work environment
  • Comfortable with a bit of organized chaos, and able to laugh at themselves
  • Creative, innovative and excited to help problem solve throughout the early stages of our business

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in a market garden
  • A driver's license and transportation is ideal, as on-farm accommodation is not available
  • Bonus points for general construction and handy-person skills!

Tasks may include (but are not limited to!):

Bed prep, starting seedlings, transplanting and direct seeding, weeding and cultivating, harvesting, washing and packing produce, monitoring, tracking and reporting on produce quality and issues in the field, maintenance of tools, equipment and workspaces, installing and moving caterpillar tunnels, preparing the farm store for customers

The position is full-time from early May until late August - 35 hours per week, with hours varying throughout the season depending on the workload and weather. Compensation is $15.50/hour, plus veggies and eggs to take home!
