Position: Director of Finance
Organization: Bruce Trail Conservancy
Location: Dundas, greater Hamilton, Ontario

We are currently recruiting a Director of Finance, one of our key leadership team roles. Reporting to the CEO, this position oversees the General Accountant and is responsible for the financial management of the BTC, including budgets, fiscal oversight, developing a long-term financial plan and providing a financial perspective of broader strategies and organization direction.

The successful candidate will:

  • Reconcile bank and investment accounts and manage relationship with investment companies
  • Review monthly results and provide monthly variance reports to staff
  • Prepare regular updates, recommendations, and presentations on financial position including operating and capital versus budget, cash projections, status of funds, and overall financial condition to F&R Committee and Board
  • Manage the acquisition of capital assets and ensure that assets are properly recorded, amortized, and disposed of as appropriate
  • Lead the preparation of the annual budget and ensure alignment to the strategic plan and other Board direction
  • Work with BTC management to identify opportunities for program efficiencies
  • Promote financial management practices and culture through the development of financial policies and procedures
  • Develop and implement strategies to proactively protect the BTC’s interests and manage exposure to financial risks
  • Develop and implement key performance indicators that enable timely monitoring and ability to identify operational changes to improve performance
  • Ensure that all statutory requirements of the organization are met including Charitable Status, Withholding Payments (CPP, EI), Income Tax, Goods and Services Tax, Employer Health Tax
  • Work effectively with all stakeholders, including CEO, Board, Committees and Clubs
  • Prepare all supporting information for the annual audit


  • University degree with CPA or CA designation
  • 5-10 years of experience working in the field of finance, charitable experience is preferred


It would be beneficial if you are able to build collaborative relationships, work well in a team environment and with staff at different levels in the organization. Strong written and verbal communication skills and an ability to synthesize, analyze, and clarify complex financial ideas and material, and formulate them into clear, plain language and present to a variety of audiences, would also be a strong asset.
