Position: Design & Communications Manager (Parental Leave Contract)
Organization: Embark Sustainability Society
Location: Simon Fraser University (SFU) - SurreyBurnaby, and Vancouver (alternating locations) + Online

Compensation: $23 - $24.50/hour + benefits, paid time off, and transit pass
Hours of Work: 30-35 hours per week
Work Term: 12-month contract
Start Date: November 2021 - ideal candidate should be able to start no later than November 22nd

Embark Sustainability is an independent, student-led not-for-profit based out of Simon Fraser University that catalyzes student sustainability (un)learning journeys for the next generation of leaders through grant, advocacy, and student-designed programming. Our work is supported by the 35,000+ undergraduate and graduate student members that we represent.

THE ROLE

The Design & Communications Manager (DCM) is responsible for the management and development of all strategic communications and design at Embark Sustainability while supporting student-led initiatives. The DCM approaches design and communications with an intersectional lens, and prioritizes justice, equity, decolonization, diversity, and inclusion (JEDDI) in their work.

This role is well-suited for a visionary strategic thinker with the talent to articulate the branding and communication vision of Embark Sustainability across diverse audiences. The DCM will be leading our communication strategy and further enhance our brand awareness and relations with our membership, and collaborators. This position reports to and works closely with Embark’s Executive Director.

You will be responsible for managing high volume and fast-paced delivery of quality design work and vision for all digital marketing (campaigns, social media, video, newsletter), together with digital experience projects (including website updates, blog writing, and YouTube). As part of a team in a small organization, you will also be supporting Embark with occasional administrative duties as needed.

The DCM acts as a mentor and is responsible for the growth and development of the creative team and blog writing volunteers. You will be working with each of them to achieve their individual project goals in alignment with Embark’s three-year strategic plan, while highlighting opportunities for growth through personal one-on-ones. It's important that you have strong interpersonal skills and to first and foremost lead with empathy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communications

  • Develop and implement Embark’s overall engagement strategy, including media and in person campaigns, to expand Embark’s presence on the SFU campuses and beyond. This should include, but is not limited to, the following tasks:
    • Co-develop campus-specific engagement strategies with the Programs Manager and Executive Director
    • Create content campaigns for promotions, outreach, newsletter, and website
    • Regularly assess opportunities for outreach and collaboration
  • Maintain and update communication documentation, to reflect current media priorities and the Embark vision
  • Update the information on the website to reflect current and upcoming opportunities, events, and programs
  • Conduct an annual content audit on Embark’s website to ensure relevance and accuracy
  • Ideate virtual/digital initiatives to support the growing digital engagement
  • Mentor coordinators and volunteers to build skills and contribute to Embark’s online presence through content creation in the following areas:
    • Creative content creation
    • Photography/Videography
    • Social Media
    • Blog writing
    • Other media programming including strategizing, planning, creation, editing, release, evaluation
  • Liaise and maintain good working relationships with news media organizations and act as Embark’s media contact

Design & Visuals

  • Maintain and ensure adherence to Embark Sustainability brand guidelines on print and digital communication, outreach, and programming material
  • Graphic design: Create assets and illustrations, for the website and social media channels to promote Embark’s opportunities, events, and programs
  • Plan and coordinate documentation of events, including capturing and editing photographs and videos to consistently suit Embark’s overall brand

Team Management and Support

  • Coach students to achieve their potential in their respective areas and role
  • Support a team of creative coordinators with planning, organization, and execution of projects as planned

Administrative

  • Keep records of the design material created for Embark’s programs and events
  • Respond to general inquiries sent through Embark’s email and social media
  • Organize, manage, and communicate with students involved with or interested in volunteer opportunities
  • Collect analytics to support the organization and digital engagements. Monitoring Google Analytics, Mailchimp Analytics and conduct regular social analysis
  • Stay up to date with the digital landscape and advance when need be
  • Maintain a database of media contacts and press releases

ACCOUNTABILITY AND REPORTING

  • Provide a written summary of impact and activities for our Annual Report
  • Attend regular ESS Board relations committee meetings and provide insights, suggestions
  • Develop a work plan for the role with SMART goals
  • Participate in regular team meetings and one on one check in with the Executive Director

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Ideal candidates are:

  • Eager to learn about current approaches within the field of communication, design, and engagement, including promising practices in centering justice, inclusion, and accessibility
  • Experienced in the areas of strategic communications, public relations, digital marketing, and interactive arts and technology through a combination of educational, lived, and professional experience
  • Detailed-oriented and has an eye for brand consistency
  • Known for their creativity and exceptional at communicating with a broad and diverse audience
  • Self-motivated, take initiative, and work effectively and within a team
  • Responsible, reliable, and consistent in carrying out work duties
  • Knowledgeable and comfortable working with Adobe Creative Suite applications (e.g. InDesign, Illustrator, Lightroom), WordPress, Mailchimp, Asana, Slack, Analytics back-end
  • Comfortable following design requirements outlined in the Embark Sustainability Brand Guide
  • Interested in working within a studentand learning-oriented organization
  • Able to demonstrate success in producing visual content and engaging communities online and in person

A NOTE ON HEALTH AND SAFETY AT EMBARK

All our staff are currently exploring a hybrid work model and we provide staff with a computer. We encourage virtual meetings and currently offer virtual programming whenever possible due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We strictly follow provincial health orders, guidelines, and recommendations and aim to keep each other safe when in person by wearing a mask in shared spaces
