JOB SUMMARY

Tree Canada is seeking a strong writer and editor with proven marketing and digital communications experience to join our communications and marketing team. This highly collaborative position, based in Ottawa, Ontario, requires a team player with advanced interpersonal skills, positive energy, high degree of organization and ability to thrive in a fast-moving environment. The ideal candidate is someone who shows initiative by using their skills to advance the goals of the organization, while providing ideas and support for various program areas and specific projects.

The ideal candidate will excel at big picture thinking while also being detail-oriented. The communications coordinator will work closely with the communications manager to create and deliver communications plans and associated products, while interacting with other members of the communications team and staff across the organization on a regular basis.

The role, reporting to the communications manager, requires demonstrated project management skills, strong writing/editing ability, media and public relations experience, strategic communications experience, familiarity with emerging communications trends and digital publishing. Strong interpersonal, time and project management skills are essential.

The ideal candidate should be bilingual and be passionate about emerging Canadian environmental or forestry trends, sustainability issues in business (Corporate Social Responsibility), and governmental/societal support for the “green agenda”.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

• Apply a wide range of communications skills and approaches to help staff effectively communicate with Tree Canada’s core audiences, which involves implementing and assisting in the development of communications plans and products for programs and development campaigns
• Act as editorial lead for the organization’s external newsletter, which involves writing content or blog articles, coordinating submissions, translation, as well as the design and distribution
• Builds media partnerships to create awareness about the organization and its events by writing and distributing media releases and active media pitching
• Produces and advises on the development of communications and marketing products related to sponsor/fundraising needs, while developing positive relationships with sponsor contacts
• Develops, briefs and writes key messages and speaking points for organizational spokespeople
• Writes, copy-edits and proofreads communications products for internal and external audiences ensuring adherence to the brand
• Coordinates the design, production, translation, printing and/or publishing of communications products
• Writes and builds digital communications products including web content, emails, newsletters, web forms, etc.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Five or more years of work experience in journalism, communications, marketing or a related field
• Post-secondary (Master’s or Bachelor’s) degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience
• Proven skills and experience in media and public relations, digital engagement and communications, blogging, online publishing and multimedia
• Familiarity with provincial and national media markets
• A superb command of English and French (reading, writing and speaking)
• Excellent writing, editing, technical and copyediting skills with a demonstrated knowledge of Canadian Press style conventions
• Experience developing and executing communications strategy and/or plans
• Attention to detail and a commitment to personal excellence
• Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Raisers Edge and email marketing platforms
• Familiarity with HTML editing and website maintenance
• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to exercise tact, discretion and sound judgment at all times
• Experience developing, editing and producing multimedia products (audio/video podcasts, audio slideshows, YouTube videos, etc.) considered an asset.
• Experience working in the non-profit or environmental sector

COMPENSATION

Note that Tree Canada offers a competitive medical and dental benefits package and RRSP contributions matched by employer (up to 5% of salary). Salary will be commensurate with experience however please provide salary expectations as part of your cover letter.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week) position.
