Position: Customer Service Representative
Organization: Camino/La Siembra Coop
Location: Ottawa, Ontario

La Siembra Co-operative is a fair trade worker co-operative, which seeks to promote a new model of trading partnerships guided by the principles of fair trade. Incorporated in 1999, La Siembra is one of the first companies to import, manufacture and distribute Fair Trade and organic sugar and cocoa products in North America. La Siembra’s Camino® line of consumer products is sold in over 3000 retail outlets across Canada.

Job Summary

  • Full-time (37.5 hrs/week), on worker-owner track, salaried position;
  • Benefits: Health/dental/vision insurance coverage, vacation and sick days, eligibility for worker-ownership;
  • Reports to: Sales Manager;
  • Responsible for: customer service, order delivery process and other administrative tasks as required.


  • Must be fluently bilingual (French and English);
  • Ability to communicate well and problem solve with customers and team members;
  • Ability to multi-task and handle time sensitive tasks efficiently;
  • Ability to work independently and within a team;
  • Previous customer sales experience preferred;
  • Previous experience working for a socially responsible business preferred;
  • Post-secondary education is a requirement.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Receive orders by email or phone, enter in ERP system and follow up with order confirmation;
  • Pro-actively liaise with customers to inform them of changes to their order;
  • Answer basic questions related to product characteristics;
  • Answer the main phone line and direct incoming calls when appropriate;
  • Provide basic information regarding sales programs (Fundraising, direct, sponsorships etc…);
  • Liaise with finance, sales and purchasing departments to relay and/or gather information related to order processing;
  • Communicate with our warehouse to ensure adequate order packing and delivery;
  • Recommend potential products or services by analyzing customer needs;
  • Assist in resolving customer complaints related to order delivery.

Personnel and Fair Trade Development

  • Participate in staff, team, departmental and educational meetings;
  • Develop an understanding of La Siembra’s producer partners and trading model;
  • Understand and participate effectively in our worker co-operative model.

Other tasks

  • Maintain/update the customer database;
  • Maintain product knowledge by studying spec sheets and product catalogues, and by participating in product training workshops;
  • Prepare freight quotes (truck, train and courier);
  • Update price lists and order forms;
  • Coordinate product shipments for production & purchasing team;
  • Prepare product samples.
  • Process invoices and credit requests.
  • Represent La Siembra/Camino at trade and consumer shows;
  • Other duties as required.
