Are you business savvy, community-minded, and a big fan of local food? If you’re based in the Humber Valley (from Cormack to Corner Brook, roughly), we have an exciting opportunity that might be right for you. Food First NL is the provincial nonprofit organization that supports food security work, and we are starting a new project to help build a new option for local food distribution.
We are launching a local pilot of an “online food hub” modelled on the one in Cape Breton. This innovative, distribution model allows consumers to order local food online from many producers at once and then arranges order pickup at a network of sites around the region.
As our Program Coordinator, you will have a year to build and pilot this model in the Humber Valley. That means working with a team of project partners to set out the details of what this would look like locally, signing up producer participants, sorting out distribution points, arranging the supply logistics, and overseeing a team of staff through a pilot season in summer/fall 2021. You will also help us evaluate this pilot and see whether it can work as a self-sustaining business model. It’s a big job, but you’ll have backup — both from the rest of the team at Food First NL and from project partners like the Cape Breton Food Hub, Western Environment Centre, and Choices for Youth (who will be helping turn this into a youth employment opportunity).
Our project funding covers 4 days a week dedicated to the project, so we’ll be filling the fifth day with other Food First NL project work supporting local food organizations. This could include promoting funding opportunities, gathering information on local initiatives, hosting meetings, or similar.
To fill this job, we’re looking for someone with experience on the ground in the small business sector, and food-based business experience is a definite bonus. Beyond that, there are many educational and professional backgrounds that could bring success to this role, so we encourage you to review the job description and apply if this sounds up your alley.
Accommodations: Food First NL recognizes that systemic barriers related to gender, race and ethnicity, Indigeneity, ability, physical and mental health, age, and socio-economic status limit or prevent people’s equal access to power and resources within society. We welcome the opportunity to discuss any accommodations you may require both in the position itself and in the hiring process.
