CONSERVATION SCIENCE & STEWARDSHIP

Salary Range: $52,130 - $63,610

Position Summary
Reporting to Ontario Region’s Manager of Science and Stewardship, this position provides expertise and support on conservation science and stewardship, and builds team capacity by coordinating collaboration and training, intern and volunteer programs, and research partnerships.

Volunteers and Interns

  • Coordinate implementation of Ontario’s volunteer engagement programs including the Conservation Volunteers and Volunteer Property Stewards programs;
  • Work closely with NCC staff to ensure a professional and well-organized volunteer experience;
  • Develop procedures, best practices and training materials to support sub-regions in recruitment, training, and management of effective local stewards for NCC properties;
  • Coordinate the recruitment, hiring and training of 20+ interns annually;
  • Support region-wide aspects of intern program fundraising and reporting.

Land, Water and Species Management

  • Provide guidance on NCC’s standards and coordinate the sharing of stewardship techniques;
  • Evaluate and report on the success of NCC’s stewardship practises and identify and disseminate innovative approaches to land stewardship;
  • Support emerging province-wide initiatives including visitor management, Indigenous engagement and community science;
  • Serve as Ontario Region’s Field Occupational Health and Safety Officer;
  • Build team capacity by supporting staff training in areas of health and safety, field techniques, volunteer management, and visitor engagement among others;
  • Coordinate the research of key regional stewardship issues and provide reports on academic and research partnerships.

Conservation Planning and Information

  • Provide guidance and support to subregions in the development of Natural Area Conservation Plans;
  • Provide support to subregions on standardized field data collection and entry to ensure accurate queries, plans and reports.

Position Requirements

  • 2 years of experience in conservation, land management or related field;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of volunteer engagement, visitor management, land stewardship, and health and safety;
  • High level of literacy (written and spoken), and ability and interest in communicating with a wide range of people, including NCC staff, volunteers, funders, visitors and researchers;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with great attention to detail and to integrate and manage multiple complex projects;
  • Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Teams.
