Position: Conservation Technician
Organization: Scales Nature Park
Location: Based near Orillia, with travel throughout Ontario. Accommodations available on site.

Scales Nature Park is a 21 hectare conservation area located just south of Orillia, Ontario. The focus of this facility is the conservation of reptiles, amphibians, and fish, and the habitats that these animals require.

Duties will include:

  • Conducting field surveys for species at risk wildlife, collecting data related to locations, habitats, and threats as well as taking measurements and blood samples, setting traps, monitoring cameras, etc. Target species may involve turtles, snakes, birds, and large mammals
  • Surveying wetlands, water bodies, forests, rock barrens and roads, day or night in all weather conditions
  • Participating in outreach activities to landowners or other stakeholder groups to solicit species observations, obtain permission to access private properties for surveying, and sharing conservation messaging about habitat protection, etc.
  • Supervising other staff and volunteers, ensuring protocols are followed
  • Assisting with collating data from project staff and volunteers plus public observations, running statistical analyses, and helping to interpret findings and compiling the results into reports and proposals
  • Participating in other facility operations as opportunities arise

Duration: Six month to one year internship, depending on funding

Salary: Based on $16 per hour, 40 hours per week


  • Ability to follow detailed protocols, stay highly organized, task switch and prioritize conflicting goals
  • Proven time management and leadership skills
  • High degree of indestructibility and perseverance despite a variety of environmental conditions (cold, heat, sun, biting insects, tired volunteers, etc.)
  • Strong swimming skills (position requires wading, swimming, and paddling in cold water)
  • Valid class G driver’s license and good driving record
  • Strong oral communication and people skills, as well as writing skills
  • Experience with spreadsheets, GIS, and other data management tools
  • Flexibility regarding scheduling, positive attitude and passion for wildlife conservation
  • Ability to work and thrive as part of a close-knit team in challenging situations
  • Internal motivation and the ability to work without supervision
