FVWC Restoration Field Technician 2018

Position: Restoration Field Technician

Location: Fraser Valley (Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Mission) BC

FVWC is hiring a restoration field technician beginnning December/January 2018.

Term: full-time, Dec/Jan. 2019 to April 12th 2019

The Restoration Field Technician will work as part of a crew, under the supervision of Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition (FVWC) and alongside community volunteers. They will be assisting with:

  • Maintaining restoration sites and projects including invasive species control and replanting.
  • Assisting with stream restoration activities (including bio-engineering);
  • Assisting with outreach events, engaging youth volunteers, and promoting conservation values to the community.
  • Attending community events to promote FVWC projects, environmental sustainability & healthy watersheds.
  • Conducting fish and water quality monitoring throughout the waterways across the Fraser Valley.

This entry-level position is a great opportunity to gain experience in the conservation field. Required skills:

  • Physically fit and comfortable working outside in all weather conditions.
  • Keen interest in local conservation issues.
  • An understanding of local watershed challenges in the eastern Fraser Valley.
  • Proficient knowledge and identification of Native flora and fauna.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle, as the work will take place around the Fraser Valley (Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Mission). The technician will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the daily meeting locations in each community.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule (which can include evenings and weekends) to coincide with public events.

Additional qualifications that will be considered an asset:

  • Field work experience; including monitoring methods, bioengineering methods, kayaking/ canoeing experience
  • Streamkeeper or other related volunteer experience
  • Experience coordinating volunteers and hosting events
  • Experience with hand held gas powered brush cutters and tools

The technician will be hired as term employee from Dec/Jan. 2018 to April 12th 2019. The rate of pay will be $16.00 per hour, on average 35-40 hours per week.
