COMMUNITY GARDENING

Position: Long Term Care Garden Facilitator
Organization: The Giving Garden – Orange Lily Group
Location: Mississauga, GTA, Ontario

Part-time contract: 10hrs/wk
Duration: April – November (potential for extension to the following year)
Rate of pay: $25/hr

The Giving Garden LTC Program works to provide long term care residents an opportunity to nurture their community, their home, and their life by growing food of their own and through sharing with others by donating nutritiously dense food to their local community. Our gardens are designed for accessibility in mobile raised garden beds, in order to encourage participation from all LTC residents.

The Giving Garden is currently looking for individuals with garden and food growing experience as well as horticulture therapy and/or community garden education experience to manage two of our vegetable gardens in Long-Term Care homes in Mississauga.

Responsibilities:

• Establishing and maintaining vegetable gardens in raised garden beds (including weekly maintenance visits and facilitating participation of staff and residents)
• Supporting LTC home staff with watering and garden maintenance duties
• Running weekly interactive garden clubs with LTC residents and staff to support residents to participate in all aspects of the garden
• Developing and delivering monthly garden programming and education for LTC residents and staff
• Coordinating garden harvests with LTC kitchens and donations to community organizations
• Establishing a collaborative garden culture within the LTC homes

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:

• 2yrs ecological vegetable gardening or farming experience
• Experience facilitating educational workshops and programming
• An interest in creating meaningful engagement opportunities for LTC residents and staff of all abilities and developing accessible and community driven garden programming
• Good written communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively as a team member
• Ability to work independently, think creatively and take initiative
• Experience working with seniors, people experiencing memory loss and dementia and with designing/implementing accessible programming an asset
• Experience in therapeutic gardening and/or horticulture therapy an asset
• Ability to travel between garden locations. Locations are accessible by transit however access to a vehicle and ability to transport materials would be an asset.
• Ability to lift and move heavy materials ie. garden beds, soil etc.
• Must be able to comply with all health and safety requirements and PPE: vulnerable sector reference check, proof of up to date COVID-19 vaccination, a mask is required while on-site at LTC facilities (even when working outside and in the heat). Face shield and regular on-site rapid testing may be required as dictated by each home's current guidelines.
