Community Garden Worker - Earlscourt (2 positions)

30 hours/week, 8 week contracts

The Stop Community Food Centre uses food as a tool for community development in the Davenport West and Wychwood Heights neighbourhoods of Toronto. The Stop runs an urban agriculture program at several sites, which include vegetable gardens, a greenhouse, naturalized and medicinal gardens. We are looking for people to assist our Urban Agriculture staff in maintaining the gardens, involving members of the community and delivering educational programming.

Reports to:

The Community Garden Assistant - Earlscourt, report to the Community Garden Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

Assist the Urban Agriculture staff in the following tasks:

  • Supporting volunteers in garden maintenance tasks (planting, watering, harvesting, composting, etc.)
  • Additional garden maintenance as needed
  • Support maintaining garden records
  • Conduct garden tours for visitors (individuals and groups)
  • Support community events, field trips and workshops
  • Co-facilitate garden-based education activities with adults, seniors, and youth
  • Promote the garden project with neighbours, potential volunteers and other members of the community.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in organic gardening (through paid employment or volunteer work)
  • Commitment and understanding of anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices
  • Commitment to social justice and knowledge of food system issues
  • Experience working with volunteers and community members in a leadership capacity
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, busy environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people who experience poverty/discrimination
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse community
  • Ability to speak a language relevant to the neighbourhood is an asset (e.g. Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Turkish or other)
  • Food Handler Certificate and First Aid training an asset
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License an asset
  • Some evenings and some weekend work required

Salary: $15 per hour Hours: 30/week Target Start date: July 3rd, 2018
