2 COMMUNITY FARM INTERNSHIPS

Location: Albion Hills Conservation Area near Palgrave and Caledon Ontario. 15 minutes North of Bolton. About an hour North of Toronto.

Albion Hills Community Farm is a non-profit farm that advances the understanding of local food and sustainable agriculture practices through farming, education, conservation and community partnerships. The farm is a place where students, teachers, farmers, community groups and families come together to learn about and participate in local food production in ways that serve the needs of growing near-urban communities. AHCF runs a CSA and Market Garden, a large community garden and offers various educational activities on site.

We are seeking two Interns to assist with the market garden from April to October for the 2017 season.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER:

  • Accommodations in the beautiful rolling Albion Hills. Albion Hills Conservation Area is Ontario’s oldest conservation area and has a gorgeous trail system that connects to the Bruce Trail.
  • We offer a monthly stipend and all the fresh veggies you can eat, and i will mention there never seem to be any shortage of other delicious & healthy foods and bake goods around the farm :)
  • We will organize several educational outings over the course of the season and have weekly field walks that will be an opportunity to focus on particular aspects of learning.
  • Garden space of your own.

  • Experience with running a Community Supported Agriculture & market garden included but not limited to:
    • Business and Market planning
    • Equipment care and use
    • Ecological and organic principles
    • Permaculture
    • Soil enrichment, cover crops
    • Garden planning
    • Seeding and seedling raising
    • Planting
    • Cultivation
    • Lean Intensive growing methods
    • Pest and Weed Management
    • Harvesting and post harvest handling
    • Food Safety
    • Market and Restaurant Sales
    • Sprouting
    • Running on site workshops
    • Facilitating large volunteer groups
    • Plant medicine
    • etc. etc. etc.
  • If you have particular interest in developing any of these areas we are open to spending time with you on them and also may be able to offer additional skills sets not listed.
  • You will have the opportunity to take on responsibilities as you learn, for things that you are interested in.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:

We hope that you are mature and applying for this position because you want to live on a farm and work on a farm. You expect that farm life is hard yet rewarding work that you can love. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals with a positive can-do attitude who are comfortable working with others and also like spending time alone. It is important you are able to express yours needs directly and are willing to resolve differences with an open mind and good communication. We hope you are curious and want to learn and encourage you to share your ideas. The work is very long and hard, but it is also fun. Your attitude is as important, if not more important than, your experience.

We will be working side by side for 7 months, from April until October, give or take a few weeks. It is important that we are compatible.

You will be willing to sell at Farmers’ Markets and should be reasonably outgoing. You will learn how to talk about sustainable growing, the products we sell and our farm to customers with genuine interest.

You should be in good health, farming is a physically and mentally demanding job!

A driver’s license and sense of humour are great assets!
