Position: Communications Manager

Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation helps Toronto transform its parks and green spaces. We work in partnership with the City of Toronto, community groups, neighbourhoods, individuals and the business community to reimagine local parks and improve the health of Toronto’s urban forest by supporting tree planting and stewardship efforts. The Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation is the official funding partner of the city of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation division. Our goal is to foster a culture of collaboration citywide to help provide the park and green space enhancements that cannot be achieved through public funding alone.

Overview of Position

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager crafts compelling communications targeting Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation’s various audiences, and supports the organization’s community engagement programs and fundraising efforts. This position works closely with the Executive Director, and other staff, Board members and volunteers.

The candidate should have a relevant communications or public relations degree and 5+ years of communications experience. Government relations experience an asset. The candidate should possess excellent written and verbal communications skills, and must be able to work independently and to deadline.

Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager leads the development and execution of a strategic communications plan, which includes: compelling communications, media relations tools, marketing materials and online social media vehicles among the organization’s various audiences, including the Board of Directors, partners, media, funders and potential donors, sponsors and the public.

The Communications Manager is responsible for providing leadership, direction, planning, and strategic management to all areas of Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation’s communications, public relations and media relations efforts, including:

  • Overseeing various communications vehicles including website, e-newsletter, annual report, advertising, our social media platform and other communications initiatives.
  • Leading media relations efforts – from writing and issuing news advisories and releases to scheduling interviews and drafting key messages.
  • Working with staff – overseeing key messaging, signage, and presentations for consumer shows, workshops and public meetings.
  • Overseeing corporate graphic standards and helping to further develop and sustain the organization’s brand and awareness with its target audiences.
  • Working with the Executive Director to recognize funding and support from governments, individuals and corporations.

Qualification and Experience: A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience at an agency, association or foundation, overseeing communications, marketing, public relations, media relations and online/social media work.

Knowledge and Skills: Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including writing, editing and design skills. Experience working with staff, volunteers and consultants. Excellent leadership, judgment and decision-making abilities, including strong presentation, organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and to deadline.

This is a full-time, permanent position. Salary range of $55,000 - $60,000.
