Position: Communications and Membership Manager (leave)
Organization: Organic Council of Ontario 
 Centre for Social Innovation, 720 Bathurst St., Toronto, Ontario (Possibility for some remote work with the right candidate)

Start Date flexible, first day of work ideally between November 5th to January 7th

1 year maternity leave contract with possibility for extension

Hours: 30-40 hours per week (negotiable)

Salary: 40,000 - 45,000 pending experience

This position may be funded in part by the Agriculture and Agri-food Canada through the Green Interns program. However we welcome applicants of all ages.

To qualify for the funding, you must:

  • be 30 years old or younger at the start of the project and unemployed or under-employed;

  • have graduated from a university, college or CEGEP;

  • not have participated in any other Youth Employment Strategy programs (that is, Career Focus); and

  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

About the Organic Council of Ontario:

The Organic Council of Ontario (OCO) is the voice for organics in Ontario. It represents Ontario’s organic sector value chains and has a membership of over 1100 producers, processors, retailers and consumers and includes organizations such as the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario.

About the Job:

The Organic Council of Ontario is looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated and dynamic Communications and Membership Manager who is passionate about agriculture and the environment. OCO has a small staff team with a broad scope: we punch above our weight! Ideal candidates will have a balance of left and right brain thinking with both sharp attention to detail, technical know-how, problem solving skills, administrative and logistical organizational prowess; as well as an eye for digital marketing, the capacity to parse complex issues into clear sentences, strategic thinking and political acumen. A successful candidate will be equally at ease chatting on the phone with farmers as they are chatting on slack.

This job is part communications specialist, part customer service, part fundraiser, part administration, part program manager, part policy researcher.

The primary duties of the role fall into three main categories:

  1. General Communications

    1. Maintain and improve the content, design and functionality of the Organic Council of Ontario’s main website;

    2. Design beautiful and incisive monthly e-newsletters using Mailchimp with relevant information for our industry and consumer members;

    3. Monitor and develop our social media channels and content;

    4. Monitor relevant media and google alerts;

    5. Support the development of media releases and monitor relevant media hits;

    6. Improve our Ontario Organic Directory and back-end database in hubspot;

    7. Improve communications KPI tracking and use Google Analytics to inform communications strategy;

    8. Create visually appealing graphics and materials to promote membership;

    9. Research, write and proofread informative blog posts that have broad appeal;

  2. Membership Management
    1. Liaise with Organic Council members, improve membership tracking and payment systems, and address member concerns;

    2. Increase member benefits and incentivize members to contribute to OCO by becoming supporting members or sponsors;

    3. Develop web tools and new website content to solicit new contributors;

    4. Update and improve member profiles, classifieds and advertising in our Ontario Organic Directory;

    5. Recruit new members through organic and agri-food events;

    6. Assist with event management;

    7. Coordinate print material production, mail-outs and phone campaigns to update membership details and recruit new supporting members;

  3. Ontario Organic Data Strategy and Policy Research
    1. Conduct interviews, surveys and research to help improve access to and collection of organic production, market and pricing data;

    2. Coordinate the creation of an Ontario organic grains and oilseeds data report;

    3. Oversee the development of an organic data microsite;

    4. Assist with the supervision of contractors, interns and students;

General Project Management

As a small non-profit, OCO’s work is dynamic and project-based with the overarching goal of growing and supporting the Ontario organic sector. Our work may shift as we receive new grants for projects that fit with our overarching mandate and priorities to the support the growth of the Ontario organic sector. We’re looking for a candidate who can demonstrate the necessary flexibility to adjust to such changes willingly and gracefully.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Is highly motivated, can work independently and in a team;

  • Is a customer service oriented;

  • Knows how to juggle and prioritize multiple priorities;

  • Is a curious and engaged systems thinker;

  • Takes initiative to constantly improve their work and the work of the organization;

  • Is passionate and knowledgeable about organic agriculture;

  • Has experience using or is comfortable learning to use various online communications and website platforms (e.g. Wordpress, Statamic, Mailchimp, Google Analytics, Canva, Google Suite)

  • Has experience managing multiple social media channels simultaneously including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram (familiarity with Buffer, Hootsuite or other management tools an asset);

  • Has experience with contact management and/or online directory tools such as Hubspot or CiviCRM;

  • Has some basic web development skills (HTML, CSS, javascript) and/or can troubleshoot technical issues;

  • Has strong written communications skills and an eye for design;

  • Has experience with graphic design (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Canva etc.);

  • Has an understanding of the Ontario agri-food landscape;

  • Has some understanding of the Ontario political climate and public sector;

  • Experience with communications strategy, marketing and designing campaigns an asset;

  • Experience with cloud file storage and sharing systems;

  • Experience designing infographics an asset;

  • French language skills an asset.
