Position: Market Relations and Communications Manager
Organization: Esquimalt Farmers Market
Location: Victoria, BC

The Esquimalt Farmers Market Society (EFM) exists to provide a marketplace that serves as a community gathering point for relationship-building, access to healthy local food, and equitable sustainability.

Wage: Salary based on $21/hr, 16 hours/week.
Contract Date: February 15th, 2022 to November 30, 2022 (with possibility of extension).
Hours: average 16 hours weekly, part-time.
Required Availability: 3:30 - 8:30 Mondays and Thursdays (April - November), flexibility for remaining hours.

Job Description:

The EFM Market Relations and Communications Manager, manages EFM’s external communications and online presence, market relations (ex. volunteers, visitors), EFM’s on-site market stall (including all on-site financial transactions), and assists the Executive Director with other tasks as outlined below (Key Roles and Responsibilities).


  • Experience in a self-directed role
  • Experience in a communications role, creating, developing, editing text
  • Clear and concise writing style
  • Experience working in customer service
  • Experience in a cashier role
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging content
  • Comfortable working with numbers and balancing financial records
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • This job requires the ability to walk long distances and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Strong creativity and problem solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interest in local food systems, food justice, incubating small businesses
  • Must be willing to work within anti-racist and anti-oppressive frameworks and actively engage in ongoing learning about these frameworks
  • Self-reflexivity, compassion, authenticity, and openness to change
  • Valid First Aid Level 1
  • This position requires successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Record Check.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Reports directly to the Executive Director
  • Attend all market dates (April to November)
  • Collaborate with EFM staff to collectively approve vendor applications
  • Create content for, design, and distribute external communications (ex. newsletter, social media, advertising)
  • Volunteer coordination, recruitment, supervision
  • Inventory management and tracking
  • Manage all market day financial transactions and market stall
  • Provide editing and revision support for EFM team
  • Support and implement programming (including but not limited to: Farmer Tax Credit Program, Farmers Market Nutrition Coupon Program)
  • Coordinate and execute the on-site Beer Garden
  • Support the Executive Director with fundraising and special events
  • Attend weekly team meetings, committee meetings as required
  • Miscellaneous tasks including postering and procurement of equipment and materials
  • Manage contributions to community calendars
  • Participate in self-directed staff reading and immersive learning opportunities on the topics of anti-racism, settler colonialism, food justice, land access, Indigenous self-determination & sovereignty, local nations, and white supremacy.
