Position: Communications Manager
Organization: Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-operative
Location: Ottawa, Ontario. Local applicants preferred. Hybrid (working from home & office) work setup.

The Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-operative (OREC), incorporated in 2010, has continued to grow as a local, green investment opportunity in Ontario. We strive to provide residents of communities where our projects are located with the chance to diversify their portfolios by investing in nearby renewable energy development. OREC currently owns or co-owns 21 solar power projects in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario and one wind turbine near Lake Huron, which together generate up to 6.45 MW of electricity that is fed into the Ontario power grid. Steady, predictable revenue streams from these projects are used to pay back members who invested in these projects, in the form of annual dividends. OREC and its sister co-op, CoEnergy, have over 900 members and are managed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

This job posting presents an exciting opportunity to work with a growing and passionate group of community members to enable the growth of renewable energy and the reduction of greenhouse gases, while promoting local investment and the green economy. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with and learn from experienced Board members who bring diverse experiences in the legal, accounting, technical, social enterprise, and community action sectors.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an annual communications plan including the creation and distribution of regular e-newsletters for OREC and CoEnergy members and website maintenance
  • Fielding inquiries from members, prospective members, the general public and media - responding to inquiries as much as possible, and otherwise directing them to the appropriate OREC contractor or Board member
  • Maintenance of the membership and preference shareholder and noteholder registries
  • Marketing and sale of OREC’s and CoEnergy’s investment securities (preference shares) as part of an offering statement and to facilitate preference share transfers
  • Preparation and circulation of annual investor statements
  • Planning and execution of the OREC and CoEnergy Annual General Meetings and any other Special Member Meetings that may be required
  • Assisting, as required, OREC’s contracted Accountant with administrative matters such as postal mail handling, cheque deposits and cheque issuance, and banking liaison
  • Maintaining OREC’s office and maintaining critical OREC and CoEnergy files (paper and digital) outside of those managed by OREC’s contractors, and in accordance with OREC’s privacy policy.
  • Liaison with relevant regulatory agencies (e.g., FSRAO, IESO) as required (e.g., Director and Bylaw updates, offering statement submissions)
  • Correspondence, reporting and support with/for OREC’s and CoEnergy’s Board of Directors, and facilitation of quarterly and ad hoc Board meetings (approximately 6-8 per year), including agenda setting, meeting material circulation, and minute-taking
  • Related duties as may from time to time be assigned to you by the Board of Directors

Job Timeframe, Location, Hours and Remuneration

This part-time (18 hours per week) position is for a minimum of 6 months. An opportunity for extension beyond this initial six-month contract is anticipated. Work may be performed from home as well as from OREC’s office (shared workspace) in central Ottawa. Work hours can also be flexible and can likely be scheduled to align with other personal and professional responsibilities the successful candidate may have. This position is supervised by OREC’s Board of Directors and will be most suitable to a well-organized, independent, self-motivated individual. This position is structured for an independent contractor with remuneration budgeted at $2,000 per month.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Communications, Journalism or Community Development
  • At least two years of experience in communications
  • Prior experience in meeting and event organization (in-person and virtual)
  • Experience working with online communications tools including Hootsuite, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MailChimp, Zoom, Google Analytics, Mail Merge and WordPress
