La Siembra Co-operative is dedicated to promoting a new model of trading partnerships guided by the principles of fair trade. Incorporated in 1999, La Siembra is one of the first companies to import, manufacture and distribute fair trade & organic sugar and cocoa products in North America. From humble beginnings, working out of a church basement in our first year, we have always had a big dream: Fair Trade for everyone.

Along with the help of our like-minded partners, producers, distributors, retailers and consumers, we have helped strengthen the democratic organizations of thousands of small-scale farmers and engage consumers to challenge the corporate control of food and reshape our food system in ways that benefit all of us. Owned by La Siembra, Camino® is a brand of fair trade & organic consumer products and bulk ingredients sold in over 4000 retail outlets across Canada. La Siembra also proudly distributes Equal Exchange® products from its sister co-op in the US.


La Siembra’s ideal candidate will bring 2-3 years of experience as a communications specialist. As an experienced storyteller, your words can bring our mission and work alive.

You are a strong, cross-platform writer and communicator who can deliver a clear, concise message for a target audience (in writing, verbally and through graphic design). As La Siembra’s Communications Coordinator, you thrive on a deadline and love collaborating within and across teams.

This role is responsible for supporting our team and our partners in spreading the word about fair trade, sustainability and democratic food systems.

How you will make contributions that matter:

Content Development

  • In collaboration with the Marketing Manager, the Coordinator will produce a variety of content for both print and Web in support of La Siembra’s communications and marketing efforts, including copywriting, video creation and editing, photographs, and recipes
  • Aid in the development of promotional content for Camino’s clients.
  • Support La Siembra’s Executive Director to develop and write annual reports, quarterly investor communiqués and press releases
  • Support with in-house editing, communication and translation as needed

Communication platform management

In collaboration with La Siembra’s Marketing Manager, the Coordinator will animate the following communication channels:

  • Social media platforms. Help establish the content calendar, create engaging content (text and visuals), program publications, engage with and respond to consumers, stay up-to-date with changes in all social media platforms ensuring maximum effectiveness.
  • E-marketing. Manage mailing list subscribers, help establish the content calendar, create engaging content (text and visuals), program publications, promotional campaigns and automated messages in our email marketing software (Mailster).
  • Website (Wordpress). Update the Camino website as needed, refine and develop content to improve search engine optimization (SEO).
  • Advertisement. Implement and execute ad campaigns (online and print) and help measure their efficacy across different communication channels

Outreach activities

In collaboration with La Siembra’s Marketing Manager, the Coordinator will manage the following outreach activities:

  • Media relations. Respond to media inquiries, prepare or help prepare for interviews, write Press Releases, enhance and update our media contact database.
  • Online influencer engagement. Engage with bloggers and other online influencers to further propel Camino’s brand and stories.
  • Sponsorship. Respond to inquiries, maximize Camino’s brand presence and visibility.
  • Consumer shows. Manage bookings (booth, hotels, travel), booth set up, staffing the booth, coordinating our attendance to consumer shows, attending the shows.
  • Other consumer outreach. Support the team in attending or creating consumer engagement events or campaigns


The Coordinator will assist the Marketing Manager in the development and implementation of a communication strategy designed to further La Siembra’s objectives. This will include:

  • Gathering and monitoring analytics for social media, email marketing, website traffic and SEO, ad campaigns, and sponsorships.
  • Supporting the Marketing Manager to create reports detailing the successes and failures of communications campaigns and strategies.
  • Making recommendations for adjustments to communications strategies and practices

You are best suited for the role if you have the following qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree or college diploma in Communications, Public Relations or Marketing or a combination of other education, training and experience.
  • Minimum 2 – 3 years of experience in a marketing or communications role
  • Bilingualism (French and English) spoken and written is essential
  • A demonstrated interest in fair trade, social justice, organic food, and co-operatives
  • Excellent organization, presentation and communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • A good understanding of social media platforms as well as promotion and analytics on those platforms
  • Experience managing and executing a content calendar for a mission-driven organization or NGO
  • Basic graphic design (e.g. developing images for social media, crafting great-looking slide decks, etc.)
  • A comfortable working knowledge of WordPress and ability to quickly learn other web applications and content management systems.
  • Flexible (i.e. willing to take on a variety of projects to meet the needs of the company)
  • Creative and innovative
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and work under tight deadlines.
