Position: Executive Lead for Climate Change Response & Sustainability

The Executive Lead for Climate Change Response & Sustainability will be required to lead efforts to establish a Region-wide climate resilience plan. This will include collaboration with corporate departments, local municipalities, local non-profits, private sector partners and any pertinent community representatives to align activities and identify synergies for efficient resource utilization, as well as providing regular updates to community groups on implementation progress.

Preferred Background:

In addition to being deeply committed to climate change and sustainability, the successful candidate will have:

  • A degree in business, science, engineering or sustainable development. Masters’ degree in a related field is an asset.
  • A minimum of 6 years’ experience in a related role leading environmental policy development, programs, and implementing large-scale strategies.
  • Experience with strategic planning and program development and proven experience in building collaborative relationships with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong data collection skills with the ability to analyze and synthesize diverse qualitative and quantitative data and information.
  • Exceptional business writing skills and strong political acumen.
  • An ability to communicate complex issues clearly to a wide and varied audience including exceptional facilitation and negotiation skills.
  • Exceptional influencing skills to garner support from stakeholders.
  • A strong orientation towards building a culture of continuous improvement of environmental or public policy initiatives.
  • Project management experience.


  • Lead the Region’s planning and strategy to mitigate the effects of climate change.
  • Oversee the development of a climate change response plan and implement and support strategic initiatives from the plan and other key initiatives from the Strategic Business Plan.
  • Identify synergies and trends for efficient resource utilization and examines innovative approaches in climate change mitigation.
  • Conducts research on current best practices and develops recommendations to achieve desired climate change and sustainability goals related to scientific, and legislative data/information.
  • Lead consultative and collaborative discussion with internal and external stakeholders, including regional advisory committees, local municipalities, residents and all regional departments.
  • Develop a climate change and sustainability lens for the support and review of regional programs and services.
  • Set sustainability goals and measures milestones; benchmark internal and external performance of environmental sustainability programs and act as an internal liaison for sustainability initiatives.
  • Monitor and report with Federation of Canadian Municipalities partners for Climate Change Innovation.
  • Develop standards, definitions, guidelines and tools for the climate change response plan.
  • Develop and maintain risk identification tools related to climate change.
  • Support a culture of continuous improvement with respect to environmental initiatives.
  • Perform quantitative problem solving, data collection and analysis.
  • Collaborate with various departments in Halton Region, non-profits, other municipalities to align activities and share approaches.
  • Provide regular updates to Regional Council, Advisory Committees, staff and community groups on implementation progress.
  • Engage in partnerships with community stakeholders and other private sector partners to share knowledge, and implement strategic climate mitigation goals.
  • Prepare and present reports and briefs to Regional Council related to the Climate strategy and outcomes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
