Position: Program Director – Climate Change

Our mission is to support organizations that work towards the advancement of scientific inquiry, the promotion of education, fostering better health, protecting the environment and mitigating climate change. THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking a Climate Program Director who will contribute to the implementation of the Foundation’s strategic goals and mission for tackling climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Reporting to the Executive Director, and focused on our Climate Change & Environment program area, the Climate Program Director’s responsibilities will include acting as the lead on bold, new and innovative initiatives. The opportunity involves strategic planning, convening, research and analysis, as well as grantmaking and management with grant partners.

Compensation:

Commensurate with experience plus a benefits package (RRSP, Insurance) and four (4) weeks’ vacation.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Foundation seeks an individual who demonstrates an unwavering passion for and commitment to solving the climate crisis. This role requires a seasoned strategic leader, who displays a combination of analytical skills and an ability to influence change in highly nuanced contexts. Experience in climate and/or broader environmental sector is highly desirable.

As an ideal candidate, you bring a proven track record of developing and executing strategies aimed at promoting social, regulatory, policy, private sector or behavioral change. This role requires you not only develop strategies on paper, but execute them in ways that result in tangible, measurable impact. You are someone who understands how to navigate the complexity of diverse environments and stakeholder groups, seeking to understand and driving towards common goals from, at times, competing perspectives. A high level of emotional intelligence and the ability to be versatile and diplomatic are key. Leading with a sense of humility and intellectual curiosity, you display a genuine desire to listen to and learn from others. You will operate from a place of respect for the organization’s grantees and help to create an environment of continuous learning with partner organizations and sector experts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Portfolio management:

  • Oversee a granting portfolio for the Foundation’s climate work, designing and executing strategies
  • Lead the Foundation’s work to support and advance the decarbonization of Canadian society (transportation, energy, buildings, nature, and other solutions)
  • Identifying, developing, analyzing and recommending grant programs and partnerships through research and due diligence

Proactive granting:

  • Act as lead on specific projects that seek to mitigate the effects of climate change and accelerates the reduction of Co2 emissions
  • Facilitating cross sector collaboration to leverage impact. This includes working with government, non-governmental organisations and other philanthropic foundation

External Partners:

  • Partner closely with organizations and foundations in the environmental sector but also unusual suspects, serving as a liaison for collaborative efforts
  • Convene and collaborate with cross-sector leaders to advance the design, testing and implementation of disruptive climate solutions

Knowledge Sharing:

  • Work with a team at the Foundation to meet board decision-making, strategic planning, grant tracking and reporting, grant monitoring and evaluation, communications and grant partner relationships
  • Represent the Foundation to external audiences and provide leadership in relevant fields of work

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Sophisticated knowledge and understanding of climate change challenges and solutions.
  • An intellectual agility and ability to analyze, conduct research, think critically, and understand scientific, economic, social, and policy studies that are directly relevant to the climate.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and inspire teams.
  • Impeccable integrity and ethics, along with a diplomatic approach to problem solving.
  • A post-secondary education in field related to sustainability or other relevant field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and G-suite. Experience with Survey Monkey Apply, Salesforce, and Sharepoint would be an asset.
  • Availability and willingness to occasionally travel within Canada.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and/or French.
