Organization

For Our Kids is a new organization dedicated to organizing Canadian parents and grandparents concerned about the climate crisis. We take a distributed organizing approach, encouraging parents and grandparents to form or join local teams and to take action in their communities, and provide support as needed. Job Summary

Based either in Southern Ontario or the Lower Mainland/Vancouver Island area of BC, the Organizer coaches and supports climate-concerned parents and grandparents to form or join teams and to get active. This is a public outreach position for a gregarious personality that involves a lot of conversations in person, over video calls, on the phone, and over email. You will work closely with the Coordinator to set priorities, monitor results, and adapt accordingly.

Job Description and Duties

  • Initiate follow up with people who sign up on online with For Our Kids to deepen conversations and commitment;
  • Introduce people who live near one another to encourage team formation, and coach through early stages;
  • Support teams as they move to action, including planning, logistics, and storytelling;
  • Support team leaders through ongoing coaching and occasional training;
  • Monitor and contribute to social media channels for recruitment opportunities and to amplify team stories;
  • Carefully log interactions in the For Our Kids Nationbuilder system
  • Work with the Coordinator to monitor results and to improve practices over time.

Management

The Organizer reports to the For Our Kids Coordinator. They will co-design monthly plans and check in by video call once a week. This is a part-time contract and there is good flexibility with regards to hours of work, noting that the organizer will sometimes need to meet parents/grandparents outside of regular office hours – evenings or weekends.

Summary of Qualification and Experience

The successful candidate will have a good combination of the following (and the first bullet point is essential):

  • A gregarious and outgoing personality, genuine curiosity about people of all backgrounds, and great listening skills;
  • Great attention to detail;
  • Relevant experience with public engagement, engagement organizing, or community organizing models;
  • Good meeting facilitation skills;
  • A willingness to travel and to work non-conventional hours;
  • A valid driver’s license;
  • Good general facility with computers, digital tools, and social media, with a willingness to train to proficiency on specific systems;
  • A strong, clear writing style and ability to tell good stories;
  • Strong interest in climate issues; and
  • Facility in English; French a bonus.

Hours and Renumeration

The contract is for 25 hours a week at $30/hour + GST/HST. There will be an initial 3-month trial period.
