The Toronto Environmental Alliance is seeking a Campaigner to lead our climate change campaigns and projects.

The Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1988. TEA envisions Toronto as a green, healthy, and equitable city with economic activity that sustains our environment. We inspire, innovate and advocate to build a greener Toronto for all.

TEA is recognized Canada-wide for our municipal work on climate change, waste and toxics reduction, and other issues we believe are critical to the health and well-being of Toronto residents. The key to our past and future successes is our multi-sectoral collaborations with concerned individuals and workers, grassroots organizations, businesses, professional associations, and elected officials.

We are fiercely non-partisan and will work with any decision-maker who wants to build a greener city for all. As a non-profit organization that is not a charity, we are able to pursue our advocacy work without any legal restrictions related to charitable status.

The Position:

TEA is looking for a campaigner who is passionate about environmental issues and engaging the public. We want someone who understands how change happens politically and socially, and how to design, develop and run campaigns and initiatives that will make a real difference to communities.

TEA’s campaigners are strategic thinkers who can work with City Councillors and staff to develop solutions, speak to the media, and mobilize public support for action on Toronto’s top environmental issues. They see how researching best practices, amplifying success stories and pilot testing techniques and solutions can accelerate local climate action. They understand the importance of engaging people where they live and want to build power at the local level to strengthen civic engagement and build a greener city for all.

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time and the clock is ticking. Toronto has a solid climate action plan to tackle our city’s major sources of emissions including buildings, transportation and waste, but without the political will to act and widespread public support, the best laid plans can gather dust on a shelf. TEA is dedicated to making sure Toronto implements climate action strategies that are effective at reducing emissions, realize social and economic benefits and serve frontline communities facing the greatest impacts from climate change and pollution.

We are looking for a motivated organizer who wants to be part of a fun and dedicated team at a lean and effective organization.

Responsibilities:

The Campaigner will be responsible for campaign and project activities on select issues, which includes:

  • Identifying campaign and project opportunities and working with Campaigns Director to develop strategies that achieve our campaign objectives.
  • Leading campaign and project implementation including: work planning and task management, collaborating with staff and volunteers to meet internal and external deliverables, and managing budgets and others resources.
  • Developing campaign outreach strategies to deepen engagement with supporters and stakeholders, and engage new people in TEA’s climate change work in different parts of the city.
  • Monitoring relevant policy developments at the municipal and provincial levels and identifying key policy areas for TEA’s advocacy work on climate change.
  • Fostering and maintaining relationships with key community, labour, and government stakeholders, including working with City Councillors and City staff to develop solutions and programs to tackle climate change.
  • Representing TEA at relevant network and coalition tables.
  • Working with the Communications Officer to develop and implement campaign and project communications strategies that creatively communicate climate change and climate justice issues and reach people both online and offline.
  • Generating and responding to media interest in campaigns and projects.
  • Generating content to support TEA’s climate change work including reports, presentations, media releases, and social media and online content.
  • Making public presentations and providing workshops on campaign issues.
  • Writing funding proposals and reports to funders.
  • Recruiting, training and managing volunteers to help with meeting campaign goals.
  • Play a role in special projects that will assist TEA in meetings its organizational goals.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of climate change and climate justice issues, opportunities and interventions
  • Strong commitment to environmental justice and anti-oppression
  • Experience working with diverse communities of people from across Toronto
  • Experience in working as part of a team to develop campaign strategies and run successful campaigns
  • Ability to develop and execute a range of campaign tactics and strategies, including advocacy, policy analysis, media relations, digital campaigns, community organizing, and stakeholder negotiation
  • A proven ability to rapidly develop and apply in-depth expertise on a campaign issue
  • Experience in government relations and working with multi-sectoral partners and coalitions
  • Understanding of the public policy process, especially at the municipal and provincial levels
  • Experience with developing and implementing projects
  • Experience with writing funding proposals and managing grants would be an asset
  • Experience with campaign data management systems, such as Nation Builder, would be an asset
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills is essential, some media relations experience is preferred
  • Ability to adapt to fast-changing situations, learn new things, and take on new challenges
  • Demonstrates high levels of accountability and drive to set and achieve ambitious targets
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required

Terms of Employment:

This is a full-time permanent position. Compensation is $54,500 per year with annual increases based on a salary grid system. TEA offers health benefits and generous vacation provisions.
