Hiring: Green Shores Program Assistant
Organization: TransCoastal Adaptations Centre for Nature-Based Solutions

TransCoastal Adaptations Centre for Nature-Based Solutions (TCA) at Saint Mary’s Universityis seeking part-time Green Shores Program Assistant.

The Green Shores Program Assistant will be based at Saint Mary’s University, working within the TransCoastal Adaptations team led by Dr. Danika van Proosdij, Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. They will work alongside the Education and Outreach Coordinator and the Communications and Engagement Officer to complete deliverables related to the Green Shores (GS) program. Green Shores is an initiative of the Stewardship Centre for BC that provides science-based tools and best practices to help people minimize the impacts of new developments, and restore shoreline ecosystem function of previously developed sites. The Green Shores initiative includes 3 main program areas: (i) Green Shores for Shoreline Development; (ii) Green Shores for Homes; and (iii) Green Shores for Local Government. The primary responsibilities of the Green Shores Program Assistant include supporting the delivery of GS training, assisting with site assessments, creating content, participating in meetings, and any other GS related tasks as required.

TransCoastal Adaptations (TCA) is a Centre of Expertise for nature-based adaptation to climate change at Saint Mary’s University. Our mission is to help build climate resilient coastal communities and ecosystems by protecting, enhancing, and restoring natural processes through innovative research and collaboration, implementing nature-based adaptation solutions (transcoastaladaptations.com). The Green Shores Program Assistant will be based at Saint Mary’s University, reporting to Kelly Umlah, the Education and Outreach Coordinator. They will join a dynamic, passionate, and energetic team at TCA who are committed to applying innovative nature-based climate change adaptation solutions on the ground.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Education and Outreach Coordinator in leading Green Shores Level 1 training by booking spaces, registering participants, tracking printed training materials, and supporting delivery of full-day training;
  • Support the Education and Outreach Coordinator with shoreline assessments around Nova Scotia as potential GS sites;
  • Support the development of newsletters, social media posts, and case studies related to the Green Shores program;
  • Participate in Green Shores meetings with local governments, and help obtain speakers that build capacity of local governments for nature-based solutions and GS;
  • Supporting the Education and Outreach Coordinator and Communications and Engagement Officer with tasks as required.

PROFILE

We are looking to hire a dedicated and flexible professional who strives to support the success of the Green Shores program in the Maritimes. The Green Shores Program Assistant will be enthusiastic about the Green Shores program, enjoy the flexibility of working outdoors and in an office setting, and passionate about maintaining the health of shoreline environments.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Completed or in-progress degree in Environmental Science/Studies, Geography, or related discipline;
  • Have an in-depth understanding of climate change impacts and adaptation in Nova Scotia;
  • Flexibility to occasionally work outside normal office hours, including evenings and weekends;
  • Adaptability to work in a changing work environment (mainly office and shoreline assessment sites);
  • Strong public speaking and event planning skills;
  • Excels at content creation, social media, writing, and developing educational materials;
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team to complete common goals;
  • Must have strong organizational, time management skills;
  • Previous knowledge and training in Green Shores an asset;
  • Specialized knowledge in Species at Risk on Nova Scotian shorelines an asset;
  • Valid driver’s license and/or personal vehicle an asset;
  • Must be a Canadian citizen or legally entitled to work in Canada.
