Firefighters Without Borders is a not-for profit registered charity providing training and support to fire departments in Canada’s remote and northern communities and around the world. We are currently seeking a new President.

Job Description: President


The President is selected at the Annual General Meeting and serves for a two-year term with eligibility for re-appointment for an additional term. Board meetings are held on a monthly basis.

General Duties

The President is fully informed on organizational matters, and participates in the Board’s deliberations and decisions in matters of policy, finance, risk, programs, and advocacy. They serve in a volunteer capacity without remuneration. The President shall:

  1. Provide leadership to the Board of Directors.
  2. Provide oversight to ensure the Board adheres to its bylaws and constitution.
  3. Chair meetings of the Board. Prepares the Board’s agenda with input from Board Members.
  4. Lead the development of Firefighter Without Borders’ annual plan and annual review. Provide direction and oversight to the preparation of the annual budget.
  5. Represent the organization at external meetings, conferences and other relevant events.
  6. Approve the annual budget, audit reports and review monthly activities as presented in the monthly financial statements.
  7. Provide oversight to the establishment of a risk management plan and ensures that policies and procedures are in place to mitigate the risks.
  8. Keep the Board’s activities focused on the organization’s mission and evaluate the effectiveness of the Board’s decision-making process.
  9. Provide mentorship to new Board members and Committee Chairs where appropriate.
  10. Solicit new business and make recommendations to the Board on new projects/initiatives.
  11. Chair meetings of the Executive Committee.
  12. Work with the nominating and governance committee to recruit new board members.
  13. Ensure new Board Members are oriented to the Board and that committee chairpersons are appointed.
  14. Provide oversight to a process to evaluate the effectiveness of Board Members, using measurable criteria. Periodically consults with board members on their roles and helps them assess their performance.
  15. Recognize Board Members’ contributions to the Board’s work.
  16. Serve as one of the signing officers for cheques and other documents, such as contracts and grant applications.
  17. Play a leading role in supporting and attending fundraising activities/special events.
  18. Promote the organization’s purpose in the community and to the media.
  19. Prepare a report for the Annual General Meeting and Chairs the AGM.
  20. Participate in Firefighters Without Borders fundraising/special events.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong leadership skills and previous experience in leading a Board of Directors.
  • Ability to motivate and engage a Board of Directors in a 100% volunteer run organization. Ability to manage conflict effectively.
  • Previous experience in leading a charitable organization and/or NGO.
  • Proven track record in directing fundraising, marketing activities.
  • Experience in securing government support for projects or funding.
  • Strong communication skills – both oral and written and strong presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to develop strong external relationships/partnerships with government, industry, NGO’s and international development organizations.
  • High level of comfort using technology – computer skills, videoconferencing, data bases.
  • Knowledge of the fire service is considered to be an asset.
  • Willingness to devote a minimum of 10-15 hours per week without remuneration.
