BOARD OPPORTUNITY

Role: Accreditation Board (AB) of the COABC-Certification/Inspection Members

The Certified Organic Association of British Columbia (COABC) has been appointed by the Province of British Columbia to administer the certified organic scheme (farm to fork) in BC. This includes the core work of accrediting the certification bodies in BC that, in turn, certify a large number of the organic businesses (predominantly farms) in BC. The COABC AB is a designated Conformity Verification Body (CVB) under the oversight of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and is responsible to monitor compliance with COR and recommend accreditation for Certification Bodies.

The Accreditation Board (AB) of the COABC is seeking two (2) new Certification/Inspection members for a three (3) year term, starting in October 2018.

The persons appointed to the Accreditation Board will have several of the following basic qualifications:

  • a) Experience in any of the following areas: agricultural production, marketing, sales, research, food and environmental advocacy, inspection, certification and/or accreditation processes and ideally a working knowledge of the Canadian Organic Standard and the Canada Organic Regime.
  • c) Experience/interest in organic farming, processing of organic products/ organic product manufacturing, and/or be a retailer/consumer of organic products.
  • d) Experience in volunteer boards of incorporated societies.
  • e) Ability to attend a minimum of two (2) meetings per year (April – teleconference and November- in person) and participate in additional teleconference/email meetings, as required.
  • f) The Certification/Inspection Member would be an individual with experience in organic inspection and the certification process eg. an inspector or file reviewer or someone from a similar field, or with experience with the development of organic standards.

Applicants must be committed to attending, preparing for and actively participating in meetings and email discussions. Applicants are also expected to have a high degree of personal integrity, in particular the ability to maintain confidentiality and be aware of issues pertaining to conflicts of interest. Preference will be given to candidates with the least conflicts of interest in BC certification bodies and associated organic operations.
