Textbooks for Change (T4C) is looking to bring on an experienced, energetic, and driven General Manager to not only lead our current team, but to also drive the growth of the entire company. T4C is a social enterprise and a top rated B Corporation that provides affordable and accessible educational material to students in North America and East Africa. We collect and redistribute used textbooks to create social impact and improve the educational landscape for students around the world. We do this by:
Donating ~50% of the textbooks we collect to partner university libraries in East Africa. Over 300,000 books have been sent to date!
Selling affordable used textbooks to North American students, and using a portion of the proceeds to help fund student-led impact initiatives.
Diverting thousands of textbooks from landfills by recycling them efficiently.

General Manager Roles & Responsibilities
Team Management (30-40% of your time). You will:
Manage a team of approximately 6 employees.
Run weekly team meetings and monthly individual meetings with all team members to keep motivation and morale high. You will also coach employees to improve and be required to deal with any performance issues that may arise.
Learn and understand team dynamics and personalities to keep the team running efficiently.
Have a deep understanding of all job roles and track key performance indicators (KPI’s) to ensure we are sustainably meeting targets, including overseeing our Amazon store account health to ensure the required metrics are being met.
Complete timesheets, track sick days/vacation requests and create weekly work schedules.
Effectively handle any other tasks or issues that may arise on a day-to-day basis.
Continuously update our Operations Director with company performance metrics and other important items.
Business Development (30-40% of your time). You will:
Help lead business development efforts by finding new partners, placing new dropboxes and ultimately increasing textbook collections.
Organize current and future partners into a CRM you select, and build processes and pipelines for growth and expansion.
Provide advice and guidance to current business development team to maximize leads and new partnerships.
Track KPIs for dropboxes placed and partnerships made.
Hands-on Work (20-30% of your time). You will:
Work as part of the fulfilment centre and logistics team:
Process, pack and ship textbooks to students across North America.
Scan and sort some of the ~150,000 textbooks collected annually.
Help handle customer service requests through our online stores.
Troubleshoot any technical issues that arise with any of the hardware or software used in our operations.
Complete other jobs that may arise such as handling East Africa shipments to our partner schools, completing textbook pickups, etc.
Note: As General Manager we expect you to become comfortable completing all daily tasks in order to delegate appropriately, help cover absences and troubleshoot any issues.
Does This Describe You?
A related degree from a recognized College or University.
5+ years leading teams to feel motivated and fulfilled with job tasks while maintaining and exceeding efficiency targets.
5+ years of business development experience creating partnerships, closing deals and producing amazing results.
A deep understanding of human resource practices and procedures in Ontario.
Online sales experience with companies like Amazon, eBay, Shopify, etc.
The ability to analyze data to craft informed decisions
Hands-on experience in the book industry and/or ecommerce fulfillment centre (preferred but not strictly necessary).
Knowledge of social enterprise and understand the importance of a triple bottom line.

An excellent communicator: You know how to keep everyone updated and get your message across clearly and concisely.

Balanced: You know how to manage your time effectively with passions outside of work.
Technically savvy: You are competent with computer systems, with a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel / Google Sheets.

Compensation will be competitive and based on your qualifications and experience.
We provide three weeks of vacation to all staff members and encourage this time off to rest and recharge.
