Position: Business Development or International Development Advisor (2 posts)

Overview

Taking Root is looking to recruit two senior members to its Board of Directors to help guide the strategic direction & governance of the organization and build new relationships with the objective of expanding and diversifying revenue. Candidates are expected to contribute to the development of the organization’s mission by:

  • Providing strategic advice to the Board and appropriate staff
  • Actively promoting the organization through his or her networks
  • Supporting strategic public engagement and marketing campaigns
  • Contributing to the governance of the organization

Below are more detailed descriptions of the preferred qualifications of the candidates:

Board Position #1: Business Advisor

The Business Advisor role has experience as an entrepreneur. Understanding product development & product funding, particularly with respect to software, is an asset.

Board Position #2: International Development Advisor

The International Development Advisor role has experience working in international environmental development projects. Knowledge and experience in commodity supply chains is a plus.

About Taking Root

Taking Root is a Canadian non-profit that fights poverty and climate change by making it economically advantageous for farmers to grow trees (and other agroforestry products, e.g. coffee) on their farms. This is achieved by providing farmers with financial incentives to plant on their farms, providing enhanced technical assistance to boost yields, and connecting them to premium markets for fully traceable reforestation products such as carbon offsets, timber and shade grown coffee. Through this model, Taking Root has directed millions of dollars to communities living on less than $2/day, created thousands of jobs and has incentivized the planting of millions of trees.

Board Member Responsibilities

Board membership responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the staff in its strategic planning
  • Assisting in developing leads for new partnerships and clients
  • Being an ambassador for Taking Root
  • Approving and participating in the development of the organization’s strategic planning, including business plans and annual budgets
  • Approving the organization’s bylaws and policies and assuring they are properly applied
  • Overseeing the financial integrity of Taking Root
  • Maintaining and promoting the integrity and reputation of the mission and vision of the organization
  • Selecting and evaluating the performance of the executive director
  • Approving the salaries of Taking Root’s directors

Qualifications

  • Significant professional experience (preferably 15+ years)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Functional fluency in English is a must, French an asset
  • Previous experience with non-profit organizations and non-profit boards is an asset
  • A sincere and personal interest in the mission of the organization and the willingness to commit time in helping the team members shape their work; act as a consultant on various topics, serve as a mentor and also a contribute as an active team member
  • Live within the region of Montreal or Vancouver, Canada (or willing to self-fund travel to Montreal or Vancouver for meetings)

Mandate

Two years, renewable if elected by membership.

Expectations

  • Dedicate approximately 5-10 hours per month to the organization
  • Attend Board of Director meetings that take place 3-4 times per year in Montreal, Canada, typically from 17:00 to 21:00.
  • Attend the Annual General Assembly (one per year)
  • Attend other key organization events (typically one per year)

Compensation

This is a volunteer position.
