Position: Marketing Assistant
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests)
Location: Toronto ON (remote with occasional in-person activities)

Full-time, 8-week contract, with opportunity to transition to 3-month part-time contract following

35 hours/week, occasional evening and/or weekend work

Wage: $17.50/hour

Additional Details:

  • Sick pay offered, pro-rated to length of contract
  • Some travel expenses covered

LEAF is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the urban forest. Our planting programs and education/outreach programs have been connecting residents to the urban forest for over two decades. Our service area includes Toronto, York Region and several municipalities within Durham Region.

Role Overview:
We are seeking a Marketing Assistant for a full-time, eight-week contract with the possibility to transition to a 3-month, part-time (16 hr/week) contract following the full-time contract. The ideal candidate will be interested and available to continue in the part-time role.

The Marketing Assistant will enjoy an experiential learning environment working as an integrated member of the Marketing and Communications team, reporting to the Marketing and Communications Coordinator. The role will primarily focus on raising brand awareness of LEAF and our programs, to encourage program participation and to educate the public on the benefits of protecting the urban forest. The ideal candidate for this role is a creative self-starter with a passion for environmental issues and experience in marketing or communications.

LEAF offers a supportive training process to ensure all staff have a great learning experience and gain quick confidence during their employment. All activities are carried out with careful precautions taken to protect the physical safety of staff and volunteers, including adhering to all local and internal COVID-19 health guidelines.

The list below outlines the key responsibilities; however, additional tasks may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities of the position:

  • Assists with implementation of digital marketing/communications plans
  • Captures digital marketing content (photos, videos, etc.)
  • Creates website content, social media posts, newsletters, blogs, etc.
  • Prepares and sends electronic newsletter
  • Edits and uploads blogs by staff and guest bloggers
  • Prepares social media content/campaigns and posts approved content to social media channels
  • Assists with website updates and changes
  • Assist with data entry and metrics tracking
  • Ensures email/communications lists are kept up to date
  • Ensures all relevant safety, privacy and accessibility policies are followed
  • Provides general administrative support as needed
  • Participates in weekly team and/or one-on-one meetings and monthly organization-wide meetings, including taking minutes and tracking action items

Qualifications required for the position include:

  • Obtained/pursuing a degree in communications, marketing or a related field with passion for environmental education and the urban forest OR obtained/pursuing a degree in environmental studies or a related field with professional experience in marketing or communications
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Google Suite and Zoom
  • Experience in and passion for community building on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms
  • Superior writing skills and excellent verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate as part of a team
  • Experience with content creation and copy writing
  • Fast-learner with creative problem-solving skills
  • Well organized and attentive to detail
  • Creative self-starter with design skills and a drive to create engaging content
  • Ability to determine priorities, adhere to deadlines, multi-task and work independently
  • Able to work remotely (reliable access to a computer, internet connection and phone)

Additional qualifications that will be considered assets:

  • Experience with website management
  • Experience with MailChimp, Drupal and/or Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience in arboriculture and/or urban forestry, including knowledge of native plants
  • Experience working or volunteering with a non-profit organization
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with our service area and its residents

Other Requirements
This position is made available through the Service Canada Summer Jobs Program. The following requirements are necessary:

  • You must be between the ages of 15 and 30
  • You must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • You must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Please note, foreign students are not eligible
