Position: Program Assistant
Reporting to: Program Coordinator

Location: Burnaby, BC
Headquarters: YVR Prep Commissary Kitchen, 5279 Still Creek Avenue, Burnaby

Type: Part-Time, Permanent (13-16 hours per week)
Start Date: As soon as possible
Salary: Starting at $20/hour

Schedule:

  • Sunday (9:30AM-2PM)
  • Tuesday (4PM-7PM)
  • Wednesday (4PM-8PM)
  • Thursday evenings or Friday mornings depending on availability and preference*

About Us

Food Stash Foundation is a registered charity founded in 2016 with the mission to reduce the environmental impact of food waste and assist food security in our community. We do so by rescuing perishable food from suppliers across Vancouver and redirecting it to charities and households that experience food insecurity. We currently rescue over 60,000 lb. of perishable food from going to waste and redistribute it to over 15 charities through daily deliveries, and to over 75 families through our weekly Rescued Food Box and Pedal to Plate delivery programs.

About the Role

The focus of this position is to aid our Rescued Food Box and Pedal to Plate programs, ensuring programs run smoothly and sustainable growth over time. The successful candidate will play an instrumental role in helping us reach our goal of supporting over 100 families each week by March 2021. Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Program Assistant is responsible for maintaining a clean workspace and sanitized materials, as well as overseeing four volunteer shifts per week. Their week is structured as follows:

(1) Food Sorting shift (Sundays, 9:30AM - 2PM)

  • Sets up the workspace and tables
  • Guides our lively volunteers in sorting surplus food and tracks food weights
  • Tidies workspace (mopping and organizing storage as needed), setting the foundation for a successful week ahead!

(2) Rescued Food Box driver pick-up shift (Tuesdays, 4PM - 7PM)

  • Meets and greets volunteer drivers with their scheduled rescued food boxes
  • Sanitizes any cooler bags and ice packs drivers bring back from previous deliveries

(3) Rescued Food Box driver pick-up shift & Food Sorting shift (Wednesdays, 4PM - 8PM)

  • Regular driver pick-up shift as indicated above between 4-6PM followed by:
  • Leading a sorting shift with volunteers from 6-8PM

(4) Pedal to Plate Food Boxing shift and warehouse tasks (Thursday evenings or Friday mornings depending on applicant’s availability and preference)

  • Guides and leads volunteers in lovingly boxing up pre-sorted food to be delivered to Pedal to Plate program members
  • Assembles food boxes for pick-up by Shift Delivery Co-op (to be delivered by zero emissions e-trikes) and sanitizes any incoming materials.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent
  • Non-profit and/or charity sector experience, an asset
  • Valid BC Driver’s license, required
  • Food Safe Certification required (can be completed upon offer of employment)
  • Offer of employment will be conditional upon satisfactory criminal record check

  • Comfortable organizing variable workloads with multiple tasks and timelines
  • Self-motivated, passionate and have outstanding interpersonal skills
