BOOKKEEPING & ACCOUNTING

Position: Bookkeeper/Junior Accountant
Organization: Toronto Wildlife Centre
Location: Currently located in Downsview Park with plans to move to the Rouge Park (Steeles & Markham Road) area in the future (position requires in-office work, and no public transit is available at the Rouge Park facility)

Work Status: Full time, Monday to Friday
Reports to: Operations Manager
Start Date: Immediate
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Compensation package also includes a comprehensive company - paid benefit package

Position Summary:

This position is ideal for a qualified bookkeeper or a junior accountant who has a love and respect for wildlife and nature, and who wishes to grow professionally within a fast-paced supportive team environment.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, and working across all teams, you will assist with the daily financial matters of the charity, in line with good practice and in accordance with our internal financial controls. You will be responsible for payroll processing, accounts payable, reconciliation of daily and monthly financials, and updating employee, vendor, and other financial records.

Responsibilities:

  • Payroll processing using an external payroll service provider and key contact as it relates to the transfer of our current in-house payroll to this provider
  • Performing accounts payable duties such as: posting and paying invoices and maintaining supplier accounts
  • Posting revenues, journal entries and adjusting entries in the general ledger
  • Reconciling and managing bank, credit card and other accounts
  • Gathering financial materials and information and working closely with the Operations Manager and Accountant in preparing quarterly reports for the Board of Directors, as well as the annual budget and annual audit
  • Providing support and guidance to other staff and volunteers when requested
  • Other projects related to finances, process and efficiency improvements

Qualifications:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, working with the team as well as with external parties
  • Motivated self-starter, with excellent time management, and the ability to prioritize and manage competing priorities
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail and a process improvement mindset
  • Flexible and adaptable to a changing and dynamic work environment
  • Quick to learn, with growing knowledge of Microsoft Excel, and Word
  • Good knowledge of QuickBooks with a desire to learn more
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience and/or training in a bookkeeping role
  • Experience within the not-for-profit or charity sector an asset

Education:

  • Post-secondary education or certification in bookkeeping / accounting or related field of study
