The Pelee Island Bird Observatory is a non-profit organisation devoted to the study and conservation of birds.

Position: Northern Saw-whet Owl Bander
Organization: Pelee Island Bird Observatory (PIBO)

Location: Pelee Island, Ontario
Housing: Will live rent-free at a cottage on the north end of the island

  • Dates: October 1 - November 15 2022
  • Salary: $5000 CDN for the season minus mandatory employment deductions
  • Number of openings: one


  • Solely operate five mist nets for owl monitoring with target species being the migratory ones- Northern Saw-whet, but also possibly resident Screech and Great Horned and migratory, Long-eared and Boreal owls.
  • Trim the vegetation around the net lanes prior to setting up the nets.
  • Set up mist nets 7 days a week, weather permitting, from half an hour after sunset for a 6-hour period until dawn.
  • Conduct regular net checks every 30 minutes.
  • Record the data in the banding log and enter the data into an excel sheet for the Bandit program.
  • Host weekly “owling nights” for the public in which the public is invited to watch owls being banded and refreshments are provided.
  • Write several summary reports- one for the Board of Directors, one for the annual yearend report and one for the regular PIBO newsletter.
  • Write and post regular summaries with photos about the progress of the season for all of PIBO’s social media channels.


  • Must have experience handling and banding owls (300 + birds)
  • A Scientific Collector’s Permit (raptor banding permit) is desirable.
  • Proven ageing, sexing and data management experience
  • Mature, experienced and self-motivated
  • Must be able to embrace and enjoy a nocturnal schedule featuring long, possibly cold nights
  • Able to interact with the public in a friendly and engaging manner
  • Access to a reliable vehicle and clean drivers abstract is required.
  • Ability to determine when help with extraction is needed.
