Position: Watershed Biologist
Organization: Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority
Location: Port Hope, Ontario

The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) is accepting applications for the following position:

Watershed Biologist
12-Month Maternity Leave

This position works with local agencies and municipalities to implement policies related to the protection of natural heritage and fisheries features in the Ganaraska Watershed. This position will be working out of the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority administrative office in Port Hope located on the corner of Hwy’s. 28 and 401. This position is normally Monday to Friday with some weekend fisheries work during March to July. This position reports to the Watershed Services Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Degree/diploma in biology or a related discipline or equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant progressive experience.
  • Demonstrated project management and strong computer skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant policy including Provincial Policy Statement and Provincial Plans (Greenbelt, Growth Plan and Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan).
  • Knowledge of relevant provincial and federal legislation as it relates to the natural heritage features.
  • Sound working knowledge of the theories and principles of natural resource management and conservation biology, including fisheries, terrestrial, wetland and aquatic ecosystems.
  • Strong knowledge of terrestrial and aquatic species, including identification skills.
  • Be a team player capable of self-directed, independent work, meeting defined deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written and must have the ability to make presentations to municipal councils and general public meeting forums.
  • Ability to carry out field work and monitoring using standard protocols.
  • Training in Ecological Land Classification (ELC) and ability to interpret air photography.
  • Ontario Wetland Evaluation System training an asset.
  • Electrofishing skills required.
  • Ability to adapt to an environment of change and work well independently as well as in a team environment.
  • A valid Province of Ontario drivers’ licence is also required.

Duties Include:

  • Provide technical expertise in the areas of aquatic and terrestrial biology which includes review, evaluation and providing science-based technical comments on development proposals, Environmental Impact Studies, and other studies.
  • Provide technical advice and support to Watershed Management Services staff and assist with the development and delivery of restoration projects, stewardship, and education programs.
  • Assist with coordination and implementation of Watershed Health monitoring programs.

Salary:

$56,450 - $65,755 per annum plus benefit package

Duration of the Contract:

February 2022 to March 2023
