Position: Associate Director
Organization: Environmental Defence Canada
Location: Toronto, Ontario

About the Role

Environmental Defence Canada (EDC) works with government, industry and individuals to enable lasting environmental change. You will be joining a fast-paced organization with mission-driven and results-oriented team members. EDC is looking for an Associate Programs Director who can anticipate and meet the needs of a dynamic environment. This is a full-time position with an excellent benefits package, 4 weeks vacation, employee and family assistance plan, half-day Fridays during the summer months, and an RRSP matching program. Salary range is $80-90K depending on experience. This role will be reporting to the Programs Director.

Purpose of the Role

The Associate Programs Director will foster a supportive and collaborative team structure where innovation and strategic thinking is encouraged. EDC’s work is grounded in identifying a theory of change and designing a path that will lead to securing stronger environmental protections. The Associate Programs Director will be overseeing multiple campaign teams including ending plastic pollution, kicking out toxic chemicals from products and the environment, safeguarding Canada’s freshwater and protecting Ontario’s environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Managing multiple teams
  • Mentoring campaign staff
  • Fostering a positive and inclusive work environment
  • Developing and implementing campaign strategies that will lead to a win
  • Building positive relationships with stakeholders, government officials and other ENGOs
  • Supporting the values of the organization

Skills and Experience

  • 7+ years experience in advocacy or public policy work with a preference for experience in advancing and achieving change
  • Knowledge of Canadian legislative and regulatory frameworks
  • Seasoned people manager
  • Solid understanding of project management principles (developing workplans, managing budgets, identifying and managing risks, etc.)
  • Ability to set priorities, complete work with minimal supervision and meet deadlines
  • Ability to think critically and make well-informed, timely decisions
  • Strength in managing, developing, coaching, and retaining individuals and teams, and empowering them to elevate their levels of responsibility
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate ideas and actions to people at all levels in an organization
  • Demonstrated ability to be an analytical and decisive decision maker with the ability to prioritize and communicate to staff key objectives and tactics necessary to achieve organizational goals
  • Strong background in environmental issues is an asset


This role will be worked remotely until at least Spring 2022. Toronto, once public health orders allow.
