Position: Associate Director, Climate Advocacy
Organization: Shareholder Association for Research and Education (SHARE)

As SHARE’s Associate Director, Climate Advocacy, you will tackle the development, implementation, evaluation and assessment of an effective and persistent climate-focused shareholder engagement program aimed at changing corporate policies, systems and practices related to climate change. A successful applicant will lead the coordination of networks of Canadian institutional investors, including leading universities, focused specifically on tackling the climate crisis, and will be responsible for leading climate engagements by participant networks.

As part of SHARE’s shareholder advocacy team, the Associate Director, Climate Advocacy contributes to research, analysis and administration related to SHARE’s Canadian, global, and customized engagement programs and coordinates climate-focused engagements across multiple programs.

Working with the Director of Shareholder Advocacy, the Associate Director will also coordinate client relationships, continue to build participant networks, and provide hands-on support for SHARE’s institutional investor participants.

Client and Stakeholder Relationships and Communication

  • Coordinate ongoing communications and relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Organize meetings with clients and prepare relevant meeting materials.
  • Draft, prepare and deliver reports to funders and clients.
  • Make exciting and insightful presentations to clients, conferences, media and external stakeholders.
  • Assist the Director and CEO in expanding participation in the network.

Engagement, Research and Analysis

  • Working with the Director of Shareholder Advocacy,
    • Design and oversee engagement-related research and analytical frameworks, methodology and project instructions;
    • Participate in and lead strategy development and planning for climate and sustainability engagements;
    • Make strategic recommendations about targets, outcomes, timing, focus and activities for each sector and company based on program priorities; and
    • Identify policy issues and recommend opportunities related to SHARE’s climate change work.
  • Working together with analysts on the Shareholder Advocacy Team,
    • Lead discussions and negotiations with companies related to climate engagements;
    • Provide work direction, supervision, evaluation, training and technical assistance for engagement analysts on climate-related work.
    • Conduct research into environmental, social and governance issues relevant to SHARE’s shareholder engagement program, with a particular focus on climate-related engagement;
    • Research publicly-traded companies and analyze key disclosures including regulatory filings, sustainability reports, websites and other information;
    • Draft briefs, policy submissions, thematic reports, and analysis for the SHARE website;
    • Prepare regular public communications regarding SHARE’s climate engagements;
    • Prepare engagement correspondence, maintain engagement activity records and support client reporting process;
  • Represent SHARE at public and industry events;
  • Maintain relations with other stakeholders in the responsible investment field and climate justice movement;
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Strategic thinking; common sense; political acuity, discretion and tact;
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain networks of senior decision-makers;
  • Familiarity and experience in working with university administrators;
  • Familiarity and experience in working with asset managers, and/or financial professionals;
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research on topics related to the financial, social, environmental and governance policies and practices of publicly-traded companies, utilizing an interdisciplinary, intersectional and equity analysis;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise of climate-related issues and policies, including standardized reporting regimes, international frameworks and norms;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in negotiation and advocacy
  • Strong presentation skills in a variety of formal settings including small and large groups, and via webinar or other remote platforms;
  • Excellent record keeping, organizational and time management skills including the ability to set priorities and balance competing deadlines and pressures;
  • Ability to work independently on a variety of tasks and contribute as part of a team;
  • Strong computer proficiency, including MS suite, online collaboration tools, and relevant database and data analysis tools.


  • Competitive non-profit salary is offered commensurate with experience.

  • During the Covid-19 pandemic, work will primarily be remote from home or other suitable location, with a phased return to SHARE’s offices planned in accordance with guidance from public health authorities.
  • Ordinarily, work is in a standard office environment, based out of SHARE’s Toronto or Vancouver office.
  • Occasional overnight and international travel required


  • Master’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience;
  • Minimum seven years’ working experience in responsible investment, corporate responsibility; climate change advocacy; or public policy;
  • Fluency in written and oral English is required; Fluency in written and oral French language is a strong asset.
