1 APPRENTICE FOR CERTIFIED ORGANIC FARM 2018
Position: Organic Farm Apprentice
Type: Apprenticeship with room & board, stipend, and priceless hands on education in small Certified Organic Farming
Organization: Kawthoolei Farm Organics
Location: Perth County, Southwestern Ontario
Kawthoolei Farm Organics is a 10-acre certified organic farm in beautiful Southwestern Ontario. We are 40 minutes from Stratford and London, half an hour from Lake Huron.
At Kawthoolei Farm Organics, we are dedicated to providing high quality organic fruits, vegetables and organic sprouts directly to people who care about the environment and what they eat. As a Certified Organic farm, we use only organic, non-gmo seeds, composts and green manures to keep our soil clean and fertile.
Kawthoolei Farm Organics grows a great variety of vegetables, fruits, including our Organic Sprouts. As well, we create many value added products throughout the season from our gardens.
We also raise Quail for their eggs. These gals are lots of fun and the eggs delicious.
You can find us at Stratford Slow Food Market and Covent Garden Market in London. We also supply restaurants and stores that carry fresh organic food. Although we sell many common vegetables, we also grow some unusual varieties for people to try. We have added blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and rhubarb. In 2018 we will begin to harvest the mushrooms we planted in the woods, last year.
Kawthoolei is a Karen (Burmese) word meaning Land without Evil. In the off-season our farmer works with Burmese Refugees on the Thai/Burma Border. http://www.darenetwork.com
We are looking for one intern this year from April to Mid-September.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER AN APPRENTICE:
If you are really interested in running a small Certified Organic farm some day, we can share with you knowledge and experience about the following:
If you have particular interest in developing any of these areas, we are open to spending time with you on them.
You will have the opportunity to take on responsibilities as you learn, for things that you are interested in.
We will provide you with room and board in our farmhouse, trailer or large live in comfortable tent (depending on gender mixes) and monthly stipend of $400. You will also attend monthly C.R.A.F.T. days and have the opportunity to meet other farmers and interns. We will have weekly field walks and use them to focus on particular aspects of learning. We will have morning planning meetings over breakfast and weekly check-ins. Other educational opportunities will come up from time to time.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:
Kawthoolei Farm Organics is a little off the beaten track. The nearest city is 40 minutes away and the nearest town 20 minutes. It’s quiet out here.
We hope that you are mature and coming to us because you want to live on a farm and work on a farm. You expect that farming life is hard, yet rewarding work and you can find joy in the work. You are enthusiastic with a positive can-do attitude. You are comfortable working with others and yet like spending time alone. You can express yourself directly about your needs and are willing to resolve any differences with an open mind and good communication. You are curious and want to learn. You are willing to share your ideas. The work is hard and very long, but it can be fun. Your attitude is more important than your experience. Think about it. Farmer’s do a year's worth of work in half a year, because of the challenges of the weather in Ontario.
Kawthoolei Farm Organics is Vegetarian. It is also drug and alcohol free. This needs to fit your lifestyle, when you are on the farm. We offer healthy fresh organic food and a clean private place to sleep in the house or our small but very cool Teardrop Trailer or Live-in Tent. It is expected you will participate in all domestic chores, including cooking and cleaning. Laundry facilities are available and limited internet. You can do emails but really can’t surf for long or download. Smart Phones work so if you have one of those with a plan you are set.
We will be working side by side for 5 months, from April until mid-September, give or take a few weeks. It is important that we are compatible.
You will work the same hours that the farmer works. These get longer and more intense, as the season goes on. This way you will gain a realistic experience of what it takes to run a small Organic farm. You will however have 1 ½-2 days off per week and can negotiate longer breaks occasionally.
You will be willing to sell at Farmers’ Markets and should be reasonably outgoing. You will learn how to talk about Organics, the products we sell and our farm to customers and take a genuine interest in them.
You should be in good health, physically fit and mentally stable. A calm, focused personality is an asset.
You need to have a vehicle and/or a driver’s license. Our market vehicle is standard transmission.
Sorry no pets. Our Golden Retriever Eh Htoo will love you but not your dog or cat or guinea pig.
