Position: Applied Statistician – Junior / Intermediate

The Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated, service-oriented, resourceful, independent, and highly skilled Applied Statistician to support our team on North American and international natural resource management projects. This is a full-time opportunity with immediate professional development support and room for future advancement. Your Responsibilities:

As an applied statistician, you will provide analytical support for a variety of projects, and you will mentor other staff as appropriate on approaches and implementation of statistical methods. You will work on environmental issues including adaptive management, climate change adaptation, fisheries and aquatic resource management, ecosystem restoration, environmental impact assessment, and decision support system development. Your day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Project support:
    • Developing rigorous monitoring plans to assess ecological systems in collaboration with your colleagues and clients.
    • Performing complex statistical analyses and modelling to support decision-makers make informed decisions based on the best available science, often in a workshop setting.
    • Resolving scientific uncertainty by combining analytical methods and technical facilitation, often in an adaptive management framework.
    • Working on a wide variety of inter-disciplinary research that focuses on complex interactions in biological and human systems, taking a holistic rather than reductionist perspective in organizing existing understanding and data
    • Delivering rigorous professional-level advice both to our clients and internally to our own staff
    • Contribute to internally funded research and development initiatives
    • Technical report writing and client-facing presentations
    • Over time as you advance, the successful candidate will coach, support, and mentor other ESSA staff working on complex technical projects, enabling other individuals to do their best and grow
    • This role (recognizing travel safety assessments and measures during the pandemic) occasionally involves travelling to attend client meetings across North America
    • Note – this role does not involve field work
  • Business Development support:
    • Contributing to business development efforts and proposal writing (e.g., developing the study design or approach for a proposal).
    • Contributing to the development of training materials.

Education / Experience

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Statistics. We will also consider mathematics, ecology, biology, or resource management with demonstrated experience in statistical analyses and / or Professional Statistician (P.Stat.) designation.
  • Demonstrated experience applying statistical methods to real world problems, preferably in one or more of the following domains: (1) aquatic sciences (e.g., water management, fisheries management, ecosystem restoration planning); (2) climate change vulnerability and adaptation assessments; (3) environmental cumulative effects/impact assessments.

Skills / Abilities

  • Required skills and experience:
    • Ability to perform complex statistical methods including parametric and non-parametric methods, (e.g., generalized linear models, power analyses, Bayesian belief networks, sample / experimental design, mixed models, occupancy estimation, habitat suitability modeling, zero inflated data etc.)
    • Experience data-poor systems
    • Experience with big data (e.g., climate data)
    • Experience with R statistical programming software
    • Experience with simulation modeling.
    • Resourceful, versatile, and collaborative team player with the ability to work calmly and effectively in an office environment with in-person and remote teams with modest instruction/supervision.
    • Proactive and results oriented, with strong problem-solving and excellent time-management skills; adept at multi-tasking/prioritizing to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment which sometimes requires intensive short-term effort.
    • Personable, with a flexible, calm demeanor, comfortable in group settings
    • Information synthesis and literature review
    • Technical and plain-language report writing, with exceptional English writing and verbal communication skills, and document mastery for complex 300+ pg. multi-authored reports
    • Computer proficiency and literacy in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
